Project Manager at Payone GmbH (Worldline AG)
- Objective/Motivation: PAYONE urgently needs a 360° view of its customers. So far, PAYONE has had no company-wide master data strategy. It is not possible to identify customers across all relevant systems.
The organization is to be enabled to identify customers across all relevant systems. Establishing the basis for master data management at PAYONE
- Challenge: Due to company acquisitions, the system landscape is very heterogeneous. The company is highly dynamic and burdened with many system harmonization and integration projects, meaning that resource bottlenecks and changes in project priorities repeatedly create an almost impossible task.
Due to BaFin findings, the project has a central task and role. The first focus is the migration of all customers, including their AML/KYC data, from the master data backend systems to Salesforce. This is intended to resolve one of the largest findings and establish the corresponding ODD/EDD processes.
In addition, customer data must be harmonized in Salesforce. Previous migrations resulted in duplicate customer records in some cases. The aim is therefore to maintain only one customer in Salesforce and, using the relevant information from the backend systems, also be able to identify which products the customer uses and in which processing systems the customer obtains PAYONE services.
Project: ONE Customer
Budget: €1.5 million
Team: 10/30 employees (full-time/part-time); 4 vendors/providers
Integration: 8 (subsystems/interfaces)
Applications: Salesforce; SAP S4/HANA; in-house developments
Tools: MS Office; Jira, Confluence, SharePoint
Methods: Hands-on; Agile (SAFe); Prince2

Principal Cloud DevOps Architect at BP
In my role as Senior Cloud DevOps Architect for BP, an oil and gas company, I had the mission to migrate the Electric Vehicle Charging platform of the EV Division from on-premises and Azure to AWS cloud, resulting in a hybrid multi-cloud, multi-tenant SaaS solution.
Deployment with Kubernetes for the application layer meant provisioning Kubernetes clusters managed by EKS and AKS, with a focus on integrating them into a multi-tenant environment. This integration was achieved by using Kubernetes namespaces and access controls to ensure data isolation and privacy enforcement.
In the database layer, we chose an RDS instance with PostgreSQL to support the backend infrastructure of our applications. Tenants shared the same RDS instance, but each had a dedicated schema.
To ingest near real-time data from physical charge points (CPOs), as IoT devices, via the OCPI protocol, we ran into significant delays with batch processing. As a result, we built a real-time streaming data pipeline using Apache Kafka, while prioritizing an event-driven architecture.
Led collaboration across multiple internal teams, external vendors, cloud providers, and on-site partners to integrate over five systems into a unified solution.
Achievements:
- Successfully designed and implemented hybrid multi-cloud solutions, integrating multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) with on-premises infrastructure, using Site-to-Site VPNs, Firewalls, and Load Balancing.
- Led the migration of on-premises infrastructure to multi-cloud, multi-tenant infrastructure, resulting in 30% faster processing times.
- Migrated workloads from VMware and Hyper-V environments to cloud-based VMs, leveraging cloud-native services to optimize performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.
- Designed a multi-tenant Kubernetes platform leveraging the Kubernetes ecosystem, using Karpenter for dynamic EC2 node provisioning, KEDA for event-driven pod autoscaling (e.g., Kafka message lag), and Rancher for centralized monitoring of multiple clusters (EKS, AKS, or on-prem K8s), replacing Microsoft-centric Azure Arc management service.
- Designed and implemented Python-based FastAPI microservices as part of the EV core-backend on AWS EKS application layer, powering data ingestion and customer analytics pipelines.
- Developed asynchronous, event-driven APIs (Python-FastAPI) for real-time integration with CPOs, supporting OCPI 2.3 and OICP protocols.
- Designed and implemented a secure, production-grade Azure Databricks platform using Terraform, ensuring scalability and cost efficiency.
- Migrated on-premises ERP to a hybrid Dynamics 365 architecture with ERP hosted locally and CRM running in Azure, integrated via Azure Arc.
- Automated CI/CD pipelines for Databricks notebooks and jobs using GitHub Actions & Databricks CLI, reducing deployment time. Reduced infrastructure provisioning time by 70% by automating cloud resource deployment with GitOps.
- Ensured compliance with internal audit and data governance standards (GDPR) through OAuth2/OIDC-based authentication and fine-grained role-based access controls.
- Developed a Zero Trust security model, enforcing least-privilege access and microsegmentation, enhancing security posture and compliance with GDPR and NIST.
- Built interactive analytics dashboards in Amazon QuickSight, integrating data from S3 and Redshift to deliver real-time business insights and visualizations with embedded access for multi-tenant users.
- Led cloud security assessments and full-lifecycle cybersecurity integration during M&A, covering AWS, Azure, IAM (Entra ID), and data protection, while aligning security posture with NIST, ISO 27001, and GDPR across hybrid and cloud-native environments.
- Reduced cloud costs by 64% for a client's dev environment by implementing automated start/stop schedules for EC2 and RDS instances via AWS CDK with EventBridge Scheduler or AWS Systems Manager.
Tech stack:
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, AWS CDK, Ansible.
- Containers: Kubernetes on EKS, AKS, Docker.
- Streaming Data Processing: Kafka to Confluent Cloud, after AWS MSK.
- Frontend: TypeScript, React, NextJS, Hooks, Styled Components.

ERP Program Manager at Fiserv
The customer is undergoing a comprehensive transformation. All SAP ECC landscapes worldwide are being migrated to SAP S/4HANA, with the goal of introducing a standard template worldwide.
The program also includes the “RISE with SAP” migration and modernization program, which may involve migrating the landscapes of selected country installations to the SAP Private Cloud.
On the stakeholder side, the program reporting line extends to the company’s executive board and that of the implementation partner.
Fiserv Germany’s ERP landscape currently includes several non-standard SAP tools and applications that extend the functionality of the ECC environment and can often be integrated into downstream systems. As part of the transition to SAP S/4HANA, it is essential to assess the core functionality, integration points and future viability of these applications in order to determine their alignment with the target architecture.
The focus of the work is on providing expert advice and assessment to define the scope, strategy and roadmap for transitioning Fiserv Germany’s SAP ECC system to SAP S/4HANA.
The recommended best practices from SAP are followed and a structured approach is used to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption while maximizing business value.
This assessment forms the basis for a successful SAP S/4HANA transformation and ensures alignment with industry best practices, regulatory compliance and future scalability.
Migration Strategy Definition – assessment of available transition approaches based on business objectives, technical feasibility and SAP Best Practices.
Technical Readiness Assessment – conducting a system analysis to assess compatibility, custom code impact, data volume management, integration points and infrastructure readiness for SAP S/4HANA.
Business Process Impact Analysis – reviewing the latest business process documentation to define the scope and effort required to implement the necessary functions in SAP S/4HANA and to identify opportunities for process optimization.
Roadmap for Non-SAP Systems and Applications – assessment of third-party and legacy applications regarding their integration with SAP S/4HANA and recommendation of consolidation, migration or replacement strategies.
Deployment & Implementation Planning – defining a phased approach for implementation, including project schedules, risk mitigation strategies and key milestones aligned with business priorities.
This transformation takes place in phases: the Discovery phase leads to the Explore phase, which is followed by the Design phase and finally implementation.

About the technology
What PCI DSS Covers
PCI DSS, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, defines security requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card data. It covers network protection, access control, vulnerability management, monitoring, secure software practices and documented security policies. PCI compliance is an ongoing control discipline, not a one-time audit exercise.
Where It Applies
PCI DSS appears in payment gateways, online shops, subscription services, call centres, hotels, retailers and financial service operations. Its scope depends on how cardholder data moves through applications, networks, cloud services, support processes and third parties.
- Cardholder data discovery and scope definition
- Payment application and infrastructure reviews
- Service-provider and vendor assessments
- Remediation planning for audit findings
Ecosystem And Tools
Strong specialists work across cloud and on-premises environments, payment processors, tokenisation services, identity systems and security monitoring. They may use vulnerability scanners, endpoint protection, centralised logging, configuration management, data-loss prevention and governance tools. Familiarity with encryption, key management, segmentation and secure development is essential.
When Companies Need Help
Companies often bring in freelance expertise before an assessment, after a system migration or when a payment flow changes. External specialists can clarify scope, map controls to real systems and turn technical findings into an actionable remediation plan.
- A new payment integration changes the cardholder data flow
- Cloud migration creates uncertainty about shared responsibility
- Audit evidence is incomplete or difficult to verify
- Security controls exist but are not consistently documented
What Strong Specialists Deliver
Experienced professionals connect compliance requirements with practical security operations. They produce scope diagrams, data-flow maps, control registers, risk findings, policy updates, test records and audit-ready evidence. They also explain gaps clearly to security teams, developers, operations staff and business owners.
The best fit understands the difference between compensating controls, technical safeguards and procedural evidence. They validate that controls operate in practice instead of relying only on written policies.
Choosing Freelance Expertise
Look for professionals who can discuss the relevant PCI DSS version, assessment method and merchant or service-provider context without treating every environment alike. Ask for examples of payment scope reduction, segmentation reviews, incident-response testing and evidence preparation.
Remote collaboration works well when system access, documentation and control owners are organised. On-site work can help with workshops, interviews and infrastructure reviews. Clear communication, careful handling of sensitive data and independence in reporting are essential qualities.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions that come up most around PCI DSS.
PCI DSS is used to protect payment card data across systems, applications, networks and business processes. It helps organisations identify security controls, reduce exposure and demonstrate that payment-related environments are managed responsibly.
PCI DSS focuses specifically on environments that store, process or transmit payment card data. Frameworks such as ISO 27001 or NIST can provide broader governance and risk-management structure, while PCI DSS adds payment-specific controls and validation expectations.
A strong PCI DSS specialist usually understands network segmentation, identity and access management, encryption, vulnerability management, logging, incident response and secure software delivery. Experience with cloud responsibility models and payment service providers is also valuable.
The right PCI DSS experience depends on the environment’s scope, payment flows, technologies and assessment route. A focused gap review may need a specialist for a defined engagement, while a complex cardholder data environment benefits from deeper involvement across discovery, remediation and evidence preparation.
PCI DSS work is often suitable for remote collaboration because specialists can review diagrams, policies, configurations and evidence through controlled access. On-site sessions may still help with stakeholder workshops, physical-security reviews or systems that cannot be examined remotely.
Assess whether the PCI DSS specialist can explain scope, control ownership, evidence requirements and technical risk in clear language. Strong professionals test how controls operate in practice, document assumptions and distinguish real remediation from paperwork that only appears complete.
PCI DSS responsibilities may remain even when a payment provider handles card data. Outsourcing can reduce technical scope, but the company still needs to understand its payment flow, provider responsibilities, contractual assurances and any controls that remain in its own environment.
A capable PCI DSS freelancer may deliver a scope assessment, cardholder data-flow diagrams, control mapping, risk and gap findings, remediation actions, updated policies and an evidence plan. The exact deliverables should match the organisation’s assessment method and payment environment.
The average hourly rate of freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects is 115 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 923 € based on an 8-hour working day.
Of the freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects, 87% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 53% hold at least a Master's degree, and 8% hold a doctorate.
On average, freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects have 22 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 2 years.
The most common languages among freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects are German (98%), English (96%), and French (24%).
The most common industries among freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects are Information Technology (98%), Banking and Finance (74%), and Professional Services (39%).
The most common business areas among freelancers who have used PCI DSS in their recent projects are Information Technology (98%), Project Management (87%), and Operations (80%).
