Principal Cloud DevOps Architect at BP
In my role as Senior Cloud DevOps Architect for BP, an oil and gas company, I had the mission to migrate the Electric Vehicle Charging platform of the EV Division from on-premises and Azure to AWS cloud, resulting in a hybrid multi-cloud, multi-tenant SaaS solution.
Deployment with Kubernetes for the application layer meant provisioning Kubernetes clusters managed by EKS and AKS, with a focus on integrating them into a multi-tenant environment. This integration was achieved by using Kubernetes namespaces and access controls to ensure data isolation and privacy enforcement.
In the database layer, we chose an RDS instance with PostgreSQL to support the backend infrastructure of our applications. Tenants shared the same RDS instance, but each had a dedicated schema.
To ingest near real-time data from physical charge points (CPOs), as IoT devices, via the OCPI protocol, we ran into significant delays with batch processing. As a result, we built a real-time streaming data pipeline using Apache Kafka, while prioritizing an event-driven architecture.
Led collaboration across multiple internal teams, external vendors, cloud providers, and on-site partners to integrate over five systems into a unified solution.
Achievements:
- Successfully designed and implemented hybrid multi-cloud solutions, integrating multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) with on-premises infrastructure, using Site-to-Site VPNs, Firewalls, and Load Balancing.
- Led the migration of on-premises infrastructure to multi-cloud, multi-tenant infrastructure, resulting in 30% faster processing times.
- Migrated workloads from VMware and Hyper-V environments to cloud-based VMs, leveraging cloud-native services to optimize performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.
- Designed a multi-tenant Kubernetes platform leveraging the Kubernetes ecosystem, using Karpenter for dynamic EC2 node provisioning, KEDA for event-driven pod autoscaling (e.g., Kafka message lag), and Rancher for centralized monitoring of multiple clusters (EKS, AKS, or on-prem K8s), replacing Microsoft-centric Azure Arc management service.
- Designed and implemented Python-based FastAPI microservices as part of the EV core-backend on AWS EKS application layer, powering data ingestion and customer analytics pipelines.
- Developed asynchronous, event-driven APIs (Python-FastAPI) for real-time integration with CPOs, supporting OCPI 2.3 and OICP protocols.
- Designed and implemented a secure, production-grade Azure Databricks platform using Terraform, ensuring scalability and cost efficiency.
- Migrated on-premises ERP to a hybrid Dynamics 365 architecture with ERP hosted locally and CRM running in Azure, integrated via Azure Arc.
- Automated CI/CD pipelines for Databricks notebooks and jobs using GitHub Actions & Databricks CLI, reducing deployment time. Reduced infrastructure provisioning time by 70% by automating cloud resource deployment with GitOps.
- Ensured compliance with internal audit and data governance standards (GDPR) through OAuth2/OIDC-based authentication and fine-grained role-based access controls.
- Developed a Zero Trust security model, enforcing least-privilege access and microsegmentation, enhancing security posture and compliance with GDPR and NIST.
- Built interactive analytics dashboards in Amazon QuickSight, integrating data from S3 and Redshift to deliver real-time business insights and visualizations with embedded access for multi-tenant users.
- Led cloud security assessments and full-lifecycle cybersecurity integration during M&A, covering AWS, Azure, IAM (Entra ID), and data protection, while aligning security posture with NIST, ISO 27001, and GDPR across hybrid and cloud-native environments.
- Reduced cloud costs by 64% for a client's dev environment by implementing automated start/stop schedules for EC2 and RDS instances via AWS CDK with EventBridge Scheduler or AWS Systems Manager.

About the technology
Business platform
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft’s cloud ERP for small and mid-sized organisations. It connects finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehousing, projects and manufacturing in one system. Companies use it to replace disconnected spreadsheets and legacy applications with shared operational data and controlled processes. The product evolved from Microsoft Dynamics NAV, so NAV expertise often remains relevant when assessing specialists.
Core capabilities
Business Central supports general ledger, accounts payable, receivable, budgeting, fixed assets and financial reporting. It also covers purchasing, sales orders, inventory, warehouse operations, service management, jobs and production planning. Experts adapt workflows, approval rules, dimensions, posting groups and role centres to match how a company operates. Localisation and intercompany processes are important for organisations working across Germany and other markets.
Ecosystem and tooling
The platform works closely with Microsoft 365, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Power BI and Power Automate. Specialists use AL and Visual Studio Code to create extensions, reports, pages, APIs and event subscribers without changing the base application. They may also connect Salesforce, ecommerce systems, payroll tools, logistics software or data warehouses through APIs, web services and integration middleware. Power Platform skills add value when processes span several Microsoft services.
Typical project work
- Configure finance, purchasing, sales, inventory and warehouse processes
- Migrate data from Dynamics NAV, spreadsheets or another ERP
- Build AL extensions, reports, approval flows and role-specific pages
- Integrate Business Central with ecommerce, CRM, logistics and reporting systems
- Set up manufacturing, jobs, service management or intercompany operations
When specialists help
Companies bring in freelance expertise during ERP selection, implementation, localisation or a move from Dynamics NAV to Business Central. Support is also useful when an internal team needs to stabilise an integration, improve month-end reporting, redesign warehouse processes or prepare a major release. In Munich, on-site workshops can help with process discovery, while configuration, development and testing often work well remotely. German and English communication may both matter in international teams.
What strong experts bring
Strong professionals combine Business Central configuration knowledge with a clear understanding of accounting, supply chain or production processes. They ask how transactions should flow before proposing customisation, and they prefer maintainable extensions over unnecessary changes to the standard product. Look for evidence of successful data migration, user training, testing, documentation and support after go-live. The best fit can explain technical trade-offs to finance and operations teams in plain language.
Frequently asked questions
Before you brief your next project: the most common questions about Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is used to manage finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehousing, projects, service and manufacturing in one ERP system. Companies use it to standardise processes, improve reporting and connect operations with Microsoft 365 and other business applications.
Business Central is generally aimed at small and mid-sized organisations that need broad ERP coverage with strong Microsoft integration. Dynamics 365 Finance is suited to more complex enterprise finance environments, while SAP Business One is another mid-market option; the right choice depends on process complexity, existing systems, localisation and future growth.
A strong Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central specialist may also bring AL, Visual Studio Code, SQL and API integration skills. Knowledge of Power BI, Power Automate, Microsoft 365, Azure services, accounting, warehouse operations or manufacturing can be important depending on the project.
The need depends on scope rather than a fixed experience threshold. A simple configuration may need focused functional expertise, while a migration from Dynamics NAV, complex manufacturing rollout or multi-system integration calls for professionals who can lead discovery, design, testing, data work and go-live support.
Yes. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central configuration, AL development, documentation and testing are often suitable for remote collaboration. On-site workshops in Munich can still help with process mapping, stakeholder alignment and user acceptance, especially when warehouse or production teams are involved.
A freelance Business Central expert can add focused capability during an implementation, migration, integration or recovery phase. This is useful when the internal team understands the business but lacks specialist knowledge of AL, localisation, manufacturing, reporting or a particular legacy system.
Ask for examples of comparable Business Central work, including the business processes covered and the professional’s own responsibilities. Quality is shown through clear requirements, controlled extensions, reliable data migration, documented testing, sensible integrations and training that users can apply.
Dynamics NAV is the former product name and remains relevant because many companies still run NAV or are migrating from it. A specialist who understands NAV data structures, customisations and upgrade paths can be valuable, but should also know current Business Central extension patterns and cloud operating practices.
