Principal Cloud DevOps Architect at BP
In my role as Senior Cloud DevOps Architect for BP, an oil and gas company, I had the mission to migrate the Electric Vehicle Charging platform of the EV Division from on-premises and Azure to AWS cloud, resulting in a hybrid multi-cloud, multi-tenant SaaS solution.
Deployment with Kubernetes for the application layer meant provisioning Kubernetes clusters managed by EKS and AKS, with a focus on integrating them into a multi-tenant environment. This integration was achieved by using Kubernetes namespaces and access controls to ensure data isolation and privacy enforcement.
In the database layer, we chose an RDS instance with PostgreSQL to support the backend infrastructure of our applications. Tenants shared the same RDS instance, but each had a dedicated schema.
To ingest near real-time data from physical charge points (CPOs), as IoT devices, via the OCPI protocol, we ran into significant delays with batch processing. As a result, we built a real-time streaming data pipeline using Apache Kafka, while prioritizing an event-driven architecture.
Led collaboration across multiple internal teams, external vendors, cloud providers, and on-site partners to integrate over five systems into a unified solution.
Achievements:
- Successfully designed and implemented hybrid multi-cloud solutions, integrating multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) with on-premises infrastructure, using Site-to-Site VPNs, Firewalls, and Load Balancing.
- Led the migration of on-premises infrastructure to multi-cloud, multi-tenant infrastructure, resulting in 30% faster processing times.
- Migrated workloads from VMware and Hyper-V environments to cloud-based VMs, leveraging cloud-native services to optimize performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.
- Designed a multi-tenant Kubernetes platform leveraging the Kubernetes ecosystem, using Karpenter for dynamic EC2 node provisioning, KEDA for event-driven pod autoscaling (e.g., Kafka message lag), and Rancher for centralized monitoring of multiple clusters (EKS, AKS, or on-prem K8s), replacing Microsoft-centric Azure Arc management service.
- Designed and implemented Python-based FastAPI microservices as part of the EV core-backend on AWS EKS application layer, powering data ingestion and customer analytics pipelines.
- Developed asynchronous, event-driven APIs (Python-FastAPI) for real-time integration with CPOs, supporting OCPI 2.3 and OICP protocols.
- Designed and implemented a secure, production-grade Azure Databricks platform using Terraform, ensuring scalability and cost efficiency.
- Migrated on-premises ERP to a hybrid Dynamics 365 architecture with ERP hosted locally and CRM running in Azure, integrated via Azure Arc.
- Automated CI/CD pipelines for Databricks notebooks and jobs using GitHub Actions & Databricks CLI, reducing deployment time. Reduced infrastructure provisioning time by 70% by automating cloud resource deployment with GitOps.
- Ensured compliance with internal audit and data governance standards (GDPR) through OAuth2/OIDC-based authentication and fine-grained role-based access controls.
- Developed a Zero Trust security model, enforcing least-privilege access and microsegmentation, enhancing security posture and compliance with GDPR and NIST.
- Built interactive analytics dashboards in Amazon QuickSight, integrating data from S3 and Redshift to deliver real-time business insights and visualizations with embedded access for multi-tenant users.
- Led cloud security assessments and full-lifecycle cybersecurity integration during M&A, covering AWS, Azure, IAM (Entra ID), and data protection, while aligning security posture with NIST, ISO 27001, and GDPR across hybrid and cloud-native environments.
- Reduced cloud costs by 64% for a client's dev environment by implementing automated start/stop schedules for EC2 and RDS instances via AWS CDK with EventBridge Scheduler or AWS Systems Manager.
Tech stack:
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, AWS CDK, Ansible.
- Containers: Kubernetes on EKS, AKS, Docker.
- Streaming Data Processing: Kafka to Confluent Cloud, after AWS MSK.
- Frontend: TypeScript, React, NextJS, Hooks, Styled Components.

About the technology
What encryption does
Encryption turns readable data into ciphertext so only the right party can restore it. Companies use it to protect customer records, payment data, internal files, messages, backups, and traffic between systems. It is a core control for security, privacy, and trust.
Common use cases
- Protect data at rest in databases, files, backups, and object storage
- Secure data in transit with TLS for web, API, and service communication
- Support secure messaging, document handling, and file exchange
- Add token protection, secrets handling, and device data protection
Tools and standards
Strong specialists work across symmetric and asymmetric methods, key exchange, hashing, and digital signatures. They know how to apply AES, RSA, ECC, TLS, PKI, HSMs, and modern key management services without breaking workflows. They also understand where full-disk encryption, field-level encryption, or app-level encryption fits best.
When companies bring in help
Teams usually need freelance expertise when a system is being redesigned, audited, migrated, or integrated with a new security stack. Encryption work also comes up when apps fail compliance reviews, APIs need stronger transport security, or keys are poorly rotated and stored. In mature environments, experts often review architecture before problems reach production.
What good specialists do
A strong professional does more than switch on a feature. They define threat boundaries, choose the right algorithm and mode, manage keys safely, test interoperability, and document how data is protected end to end. They also avoid common mistakes such as weak random generation, hardcoded secrets, and using the wrong cipher for the task.
How teams work with them
Encryption experts often collaborate remotely because the work centers on code, architecture, and security review. On-site time can help during workshops, incident response, or regulated delivery. The best results come when the specialist can work with security, backend, infrastructure, and compliance owners in the same delivery flow.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about Encryption? Start with the answers below.
A strong encryption expert helps protect data in transit and at rest, usually across web apps, APIs, files, backups, and internal systems. They also help with key management, certificate handling, and secure integration between services. The work is often as much about design and process as it is about cryptography.
Encryption is reversible when you have the right key, while hashing is one-way and used to verify data or store passwords safely. Companies often need both, but for different goals. A good specialist knows when each one belongs in the design.
Encryption is often weighed against tokenization, masking, access control, and hashing. Those methods can reduce exposure, but they do not solve the same problem in every case. A specialist should explain where encryption is required and where a lighter control is enough.
A strong encryption freelancer usually also knows PKI, TLS, certificate lifecycle management, secrets handling, and cloud key services. For application work, secure coding and threat modeling matter too. For infrastructure work, experience with storage, identity, and network security is valuable.
A small integration may only need a specialist who can review TLS settings or help replace weak library defaults. A sensitive platform with multiple services, key rotation, and regulatory pressure needs deeper architectural experience. The more systems and teams involved, the more important the specialist’s judgment becomes.
Yes. Most encryption work is remote-friendly because it involves architecture, code review, configuration, and documentation. On-site sessions can still help when teams need to align on risk, incident response, or compliance requirements.
Look for clear decisions about algorithms, key storage, rotation, certificate handling, and failure modes. A strong encryption specialist explains trade-offs in plain language and can show secure patterns in real systems. Good work is easy to maintain and hard to misuse.
Common problems include hardcoded secrets, weak random generation, using outdated algorithms, and storing keys too close to the data they protect. Another frequent issue is mixing business logic with cryptography in ways that are hard to audit. A careful encryption expert spots these risks early and keeps the design simple.
The average hourly rate of freelancers who have used Encryption in their recent projects is 103 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 820 € based on an 8-hour working day.
Of the freelancers who have used Encryption in their recent projects, 86% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 48% hold at least a Master's degree, and 8% hold a doctorate.
On average, freelancers who have used Encryption in their recent projects have 20 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 3 years.
The most common languages among freelancers who have used Encryption in their recent projects are English (97%), German (96%), and Spanish (22%).
The most common industries among freelancers who have used Encryption in their recent projects are Information Technology (95%), Banking and Finance (57%), and Manufacturing (49%).
