Principal Cloud DevOps Architect at BP
In my role as Senior Cloud DevOps Architect for BP, an oil and gas company, I had the mission to migrate the Electric Vehicle Charging platform of the EV Division from on-premises and Azure to AWS cloud, resulting in a hybrid multi-cloud, multi-tenant SaaS solution.
Deployment with Kubernetes for the application layer meant provisioning Kubernetes clusters managed by EKS and AKS, with a focus on integrating them into a multi-tenant environment. This integration was achieved by using Kubernetes namespaces and access controls to ensure data isolation and privacy enforcement.
In the database layer, we chose an RDS instance with PostgreSQL to support the backend infrastructure of our applications. Tenants shared the same RDS instance, but each had a dedicated schema.
To ingest near real-time data from physical charge points (CPOs), as IoT devices, via the OCPI protocol, we ran into significant delays with batch processing. As a result, we built a real-time streaming data pipeline using Apache Kafka, while prioritizing an event-driven architecture.
Led collaboration across multiple internal teams, external vendors, cloud providers, and on-site partners to integrate over five systems into a unified solution.
Achievements:
- Successfully designed and implemented hybrid multi-cloud solutions, integrating multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) with on-premises infrastructure, using Site-to-Site VPNs, Firewalls, and Load Balancing.
- Led the migration of on-premises infrastructure to multi-cloud, multi-tenant infrastructure, resulting in 30% faster processing times.
- Migrated workloads from VMware and Hyper-V environments to cloud-based VMs, leveraging cloud-native services to optimize performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.
- Designed a multi-tenant Kubernetes platform leveraging the Kubernetes ecosystem, using Karpenter for dynamic EC2 node provisioning, KEDA for event-driven pod autoscaling (e.g., Kafka message lag), and Rancher for centralized monitoring of multiple clusters (EKS, AKS, or on-prem K8s), replacing Microsoft-centric Azure Arc management service.
- Designed and implemented Python-based FastAPI microservices as part of the EV core-backend on AWS EKS application layer, powering data ingestion and customer analytics pipelines.
- Developed asynchronous, event-driven APIs (Python-FastAPI) for real-time integration with CPOs, supporting OCPI 2.3 and OICP protocols.
- Designed and implemented a secure, production-grade Azure Databricks platform using Terraform, ensuring scalability and cost efficiency.
- Migrated on-premises ERP to a hybrid Dynamics 365 architecture with ERP hosted locally and CRM running in Azure, integrated via Azure Arc.
- Automated CI/CD pipelines for Databricks notebooks and jobs using GitHub Actions & Databricks CLI, reducing deployment time. Reduced infrastructure provisioning time by 70% by automating cloud resource deployment with GitOps.
- Ensured compliance with internal audit and data governance standards (GDPR) through OAuth2/OIDC-based authentication and fine-grained role-based access controls.
- Developed a Zero Trust security model, enforcing least-privilege access and microsegmentation, enhancing security posture and compliance with GDPR and NIST.
- Built interactive analytics dashboards in Amazon QuickSight, integrating data from S3 and Redshift to deliver real-time business insights and visualizations with embedded access for multi-tenant users.
- Led cloud security assessments and full-lifecycle cybersecurity integration during M&A, covering AWS, Azure, IAM (Entra ID), and data protection, while aligning security posture with NIST, ISO 27001, and GDPR across hybrid and cloud-native environments.
- Reduced cloud costs by 64% for a client's dev environment by implementing automated start/stop schedules for EC2 and RDS instances via AWS CDK with EventBridge Scheduler or AWS Systems Manager.
Tech stack:
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, AWS CDK, Ansible.
- Containers: Kubernetes on EKS, AKS, Docker.
- Streaming Data Processing: Kafka to Confluent Cloud, after AWS MSK.

About the technology
What Cloud Security Covers
Cloud security protects data, identities, applications and infrastructure hosted in public, private or hybrid cloud environments. It combines preventive controls, continuous monitoring and incident response across services, networks, workloads and users. The work spans both technical safeguards and the policies that govern cloud access.
Platforms And Tooling
Cloud security specialists work across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, adapting controls to each provider’s identity, networking and logging model. Their toolset can include cloud security posture management, cloud workload protection, identity and access management, secrets management and security information and event management. CNAPP platforms bring several of these capabilities together for cloud-native environments.
Typical Deliverables
- Cloud security architecture for new or existing environments
- Identity, role and privileged-access models
- Network segmentation, private connectivity and firewall policies
- Logging, detection rules and incident response playbooks
- Container, Kubernetes and serverless workload controls
These deliverables help teams reduce exposure while keeping cloud services usable for product and operations teams. Strong work includes clear documentation and repeatable controls that can be managed through infrastructure as code.
When Companies Need Specialists
Companies often bring in freelance cloud security expertise during a cloud migration, platform redesign, compliance preparation or major application launch. Outside specialists can assess an environment without internal assumptions, resolve gaps between cloud teams and security teams, and establish practical guardrails. They are also useful after an incident or when internal professionals need focused support for a high-risk workstream.
Skills That Matter
Effective cloud security work connects provider-specific knowledge with broad security practice. Look for capability in IAM, threat modeling, vulnerability management, encryption, key management, network security, containers and DevSecOps. Experience with Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code approach helps make controls consistent, reviewable and easier to restore.
What Strong Professionals Show
Strong professionals explain risk in terms the business and technical teams can act on. They test permissions, validate alert quality, review logging coverage and demonstrate how a control works rather than relying on configuration alone. They also distinguish provider defaults from genuinely secure designs, leave usable runbooks behind and balance protection with availability, delivery speed and operational effort.
Frequently asked questions
Not sure where to start with Cloud Security? These answers cover the essentials.
Cloud Security is used to protect cloud-hosted identities, data, applications, networks and infrastructure from unauthorized access, misconfiguration and attacks. A specialist may design access controls, monitor activity, secure workloads and prepare response procedures.
Cloud Security applies familiar security principles to environments where providers operate part of the infrastructure and resources can change quickly. It places greater emphasis on identity, automation, shared-responsibility boundaries, configuration management and continuous visibility than many traditional data-centre models.
A strong Cloud Security specialist usually understands IAM, network security, encryption, threat modeling and incident response. Skills in Terraform, Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD security and security information and event management are also valuable for modern cloud-native systems.
The right level depends on the scope, risk and cloud architecture involved. A focused configuration review may suit a specialist with targeted platform knowledge, while a multi-cloud redesign, incident response effort or security operating model needs deep experience across architecture, governance and operations.
Much of Cloud Security can be delivered remotely through secure access, architecture workshops, code review and documented testing. On-site collaboration can still help when teams need intensive incident coordination, sensitive environment access or close alignment with infrastructure and compliance stakeholders.
Review whether the Cloud Security freelancer has worked with the relevant provider, workload types and operating model rather than only holding general security credentials. Ask for examples of practical deliverables, such as IAM redesigns, threat detections, architecture reviews or incident playbooks, with sensitive details removed.
CNAPP is a category of tools that combines capabilities such as cloud posture management, workload protection and application security. It supports Cloud Security, but a complete security approach also requires sound architecture, identity governance, processes and skilled people.
Quality Cloud Security work makes risks visible, assigns clear ownership and produces controls that can be tested and maintained. Look for evidence of permission validation, useful detection logic, complete logging, documented assumptions and a measured balance between security, availability and delivery needs.
The average hourly rate of freelancers who have used Cloud Security in their recent projects is 112 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 898 € based on an 8-hour working day.
Of the freelancers who have used Cloud Security in their recent projects, 83% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 48% hold at least a Master's degree, and 10% hold a doctorate.
On average, freelancers who have used Cloud Security in their recent projects have 19 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 2.6 years.
The most common languages among freelancers who have used Cloud Security in their recent projects are English (100%), German (94%), and French (22%).
