Strategy

Working as independent / interim / fractional CTO / engineering director, technical leader, builder, coach. Select achievements:

  • Fractional CTO for a music-tech startup. Helped unlock further funding by providing the technical strategy and plan behind their vision and pitch deck, then executed it: vision to a working beta, 0 to 1, on time and on budget against that plan.
  • AI automation for a compliance business. An annual research process — days of a person working through spreadsheets and checking websites by hand, so costly it had been abandoned for years — now runs automatically every month and takes about an hour to review. Stale or missing data became current data, twelve times a year.
  • An AI development autopilot. Agents take an approved ticket, implement test-first, verify against a running system and open a pull request. An AI committee reviews on various categories and provides risk assessments based on my specs. Nothing merges without a human.
  • Coaching and sparring for engineering leaders. Developing engineering managers was most of my job as a director; I now do it one to one.

Co-founded an early-stage startup aimed at digitising fabrication workflows for dental practices, providing cloud services and leveraging novel manufacturing techniques including 3D printing. Took the product from concept to working software as a zero-to-one build — handling technical architecture, infrastructure, and early product decisions simultaneously.

The product was built as a frontend over an n8n-orchestrated backend connecting cloud services to manufacturing equipment — an early production use of n8n beyond simple integrations.

The venture ultimately didn't scale commercially due to legislative challenges in Germany, but validated my ability to operate as a technical founder across the full stack of early-stage product development.

Joined as Principal Engineer to help scale a data-heavy customer engagement platform that was hitting serious architectural limits. Inherited a monolithic system with growing bottlenecks and systematically decomposed it into event-driven microservices, using Kafka pipelines to isolate and alleviate the most critical data processing constraints. The work restored throughput and reliability while keeping the platform live throughout.

Led technical strategy across three agile teams, advancing the architecture toward domain-driven microservices on Kubernetes, underpinned by a Kafka-based choreography model and a stack including Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Flink, Hadoop, and Kafka Streams. Embedded observability, resilience, and CI/CD practices across the engineering organisation.

When the Engineering Director departed, I was asked to step into the role.

As MTS-1 (Member of Technical Staff) at eBay Kleinanzeigen, led architectural decisions and solutions across teams, focusing on data systems and scalable microservices. Served as an architectural spokesperson in the ECG-wide guild, streamlining initiatives across countries.

Key contributions include:

  • Designed and implemented a global push notification service (multi-tenant, Google Firebase, Cassandra, Kafka) used across ECG entities.
  • Led migration to a new backend push notification infrastructure for mobile apps.
  • Owned and advanced the Kafka Streams ecosystem, providing support, consultation, and troubleshooting.
  • Oversaw home feed improvements, scaling infinite scrolling recommendations for tens of millions of users using Kafka Streams.
  • Championed the adoption of Kotlin within the backend team.

Additionally, contributed as a tech stakeholder in guilds for architecture, experimentation, and frontend innovation.

One of my notable projects of 2017 was the introduction and continued iteration on a feature called the "feed", which presents the user with a scrollable feed of personalised items that are on offer at that time on the platform. Utilising streaming solutions based on Kafka and search technology based on Elasticsearch we were able to produce a personalised feed on the homepage for millions of users.

This work was presented at Codetalks Hamburg and Berlin Buzzwords, and documented in a published technical blog post.

Marktplaats, the largest classifieds platform in the Netherlands and part of the eBay Classifieds Group, serves millions of users across multiple platforms.

As a backend-focused developer in a dual-track agile, cross-disciplinary team, worked on the “finding” aspect of the customer journey, including personalized suggestions and search functionality, leveraging experimentation to build data-driven products.

Key projects:

  • Split a monolithic frontend into two domain-driven frontends seamlessly, ensuring zero downtime and minimal impact on other teams.
  • Developed an event-sourced (Scala-based) microservice for the in-house A/B testing framework that I created, enabling auditable logs of experiments. Initially local, this service was scaled for use across multiple eBay Classifieds Group platforms.

  • Built a proof-of-concept chat/messaging app integrated into the platform as part of a small tiger team.
  • Developed one of Marktplaats’ first Spark jobs to analyze logs and calculate related searches.
  • Played a pivotal role in Marktplaats’ first dual-track agile, domain-driven team, driving product experimentation, fast iteration, and user-focused development.

Summary

I work as a fractional CTO and engineering leader for early-stage companies moving from a working prototype to a reliable engineering organisation. I help shape technical strategy, turn product visions into working software, and coach engineering leaders. My experience spans zero-to-one product development, team design, architecture, delivery, and production AI systems.

I led Spotify’s live music and ticketing engineering organisation of around 40 engineers across web, mobile, backend, and data. Earlier, I decomposed a monolithic data platform into event-driven microservices at CrossEngage and built personalisation systems serving tens of millions of users at eBay. I work hands-on with distributed systems, Kafka, Kubernetes, data and ML platforms, and pragmatic AI automation, with an MSc in Artificial Intelligence.
