Data Security

Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

What ISO 27001 covers

ISO 27001, formally ISO/IEC 27001, is the international standard for an information security management system. It gives organisations a structured way to identify information risks, define security controls, assign responsibilities and improve protection over time. The standard applies to the organisation’s scope, processes, people, technology and suppliers.

What it helps build

An ISO 27001 programme turns security expectations into documented, repeatable operating practices. It can support customer assurance, procurement requirements and stronger governance across cloud services, internal systems and outsourced operations.

  • Information security policies and objectives
  • Risk assessment and treatment processes
  • Control frameworks and evidence registers
  • Supplier, access and incident management
  • Internal review and continual improvement

Ecosystem and tooling

Specialists work across governance, risk and compliance tools, identity platforms, cloud environments and documentation systems. They may map controls to regulations and frameworks such as GDPR, SOC 2, NIST or CIS, while using ticketing, asset management and security monitoring tools to maintain evidence. The work also involves clear ownership, version control and management reporting.

When companies need specialists

Companies often bring in freelance expertise when certification is a new goal, an existing system needs remediation or an organisation is preparing for a surveillance or recertification audit. External support is also useful after an acquisition, major cloud migration, security incident or change in customer requirements.

  • The scope of the information security management system is unclear
  • Risk treatment plans are incomplete or outdated
  • Policies exist but lack operational evidence
  • Suppliers and access rights are not reviewed consistently

Working in Hamburg

Hamburg companies in logistics, aviation, media, manufacturing, professional services and digital commerce may need security evidence that stands up to customer and supply-chain scrutiny. Local specialists can support workshops and stakeholder sessions on site, while remote professionals can manage documentation, interviews and evidence reviews across distributed teams. German and English communication may both matter in international organisations.

What strong professionals bring

Strong ISO 27001 professionals connect the standard to how a business actually operates. They define a realistic scope, distinguish risks from controls, create evidence that teams can maintain and explain decisions in language that leadership, technical teams and external assessors understand. They also know that certification is not the finish line: control performance, corrective actions, review cycles and changes in the business must remain visible.

Frequently asked questions

Curious about ISO 27001? Here are the answers that come up again and again.

ISO 27001 is used to establish, operate and continually improve an information security management system. It helps an organisation manage risks to confidentiality, integrity and availability, while providing structured evidence for customers, procurement teams and certification audits.

ISO/IEC 27001 is a certifiable management system standard with a defined organisational scope and risk-based controls. SOC 2 focuses on controls relevant to selected trust services, while NIST frameworks provide guidance and control structures; companies often map these approaches rather than treat them as direct substitutes.

A strong ISO 27001 specialist often brings risk management, privacy, supplier assurance, identity and access management, cloud security and incident response knowledge. Familiarity with GDPR, NIST, SOC 2, business continuity and evidence management can make the work more practical.

The right level of experience depends on the scope, business complexity, existing controls and certification timeline. A capable ISO 27001 professional should have handled comparable information security management systems and be able to show how risks, controls, evidence and corrective actions were connected.

ISO 27001 work can often be delivered remotely because interviews, policy reviews, risk workshops and evidence checks are digital activities. On-site sessions in Hamburg may still help when teams, facilities or operational processes need direct observation, especially during scope definition.

An ISO 27001 freelancer may deliver the management system scope, policy set, risk methodology, risk register, statement of applicability, control ownership model and evidence plan. Depending on the engagement, they may also support internal reviews, management review preparation and audit-readiness activities.

Ask for examples of completed ISO 27001 programmes with a similar scope, operating model and technology environment. Check whether the professional can explain trade-offs, produce maintainable evidence and work with business owners rather than relying on generic templates.

ISO 27001 certification is an independent assessment of whether an information security management system meets the standard within its stated scope. Compliance work may address selected controls or customer requirements without pursuing certification, so the intended outcome should be agreed before the engagement begins.
