About the technology

What IO-Link does

IO-Link is a point-to-point communication standard for connecting intelligent sensors and actuators to an IO-Link master. It carries process values, parameters, diagnostics and device identification over standard industrial cabling. Unlike simple binary or analogue signals, it enables two-way communication down to the field device.

Devices and architecture

An IO-Link system combines sensors or actuators, master ports, device descriptions and a controller or higher-level application. The IODD file defines each device’s data and parameters, while the master provides the gateway to a PLC or industrial network. Experts work with port classes, communication modes and engineering tools across the full installation.

  • Select compatible sensors, actuators and IO-Link masters
  • Import IODD files and configure device parameters
  • Map process, diagnostic and event data to the control system

Networks and tooling

IO-Link commonly connects through masters with interfaces such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT or Modbus TCP. Projects may also expose production data through OPC UA, MQTT or a manufacturing data layer. Strong specialists understand PLC configuration, device integration, network diagnostics and the vendor tools used to commission each master.

Where companies use it

Companies use IO-Link in packaging, assembly, intralogistics, process support and machine building. Typical applications include presence detection, pressure and temperature measurement, gripping, identification and condition monitoring. In Germany, specialists often support machine commissioning, retrofit work and collaboration between plant teams, controls groups and equipment suppliers.

  • Replace hard-wired sensors with parameterisable devices
  • Standardise device replacement and automatic parameter download
  • Capture diagnostics for maintenance and production support

When to bring in an expert

Freelance expertise helps when a machine needs a new IO-Link architecture, a master must be integrated into an existing PLC project, or device data is not reaching the supervisory layer. Specialists can also resolve IODD issues, port configuration errors, inconsistent diagnostics and commissioning delays. Remote work suits configuration and troubleshooting; on-site support is valuable during wiring checks and production start-up.

What good work looks like

Strong IO-Link professionals document the topology, device parameters, IODD versions, PLC mappings and diagnostic behaviour. They test fallback states, replacement procedures and network communication under realistic operating conditions. They also distinguish a sensor fault from a cable, port, master or controller issue, and explain the result clearly to both automation teams and plant operators.

Frequently asked questions

Before you brief your next project: the most common questions about IO-Link.

IO-Link connects intelligent sensors and actuators to a master using bidirectional digital communication. Companies use it to transfer process values, configure devices remotely, read diagnostics and simplify replacement without relying only on fixed analogue or switching signals.

IO-Link adds parameterisation, identification and diagnostic data to a point-to-point sensor connection, while traditional wiring often carries only a switching or analogue value. It does not replace every fieldbus; the IO-Link master still links the devices to systems such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or EtherCAT.

A strong IO-Link specialist usually understands PLC programming, industrial Ethernet, IODD files, sensor selection and commissioning. Experience with a relevant master vendor, network diagnostics and technologies such as OPC UA can also matter when device data must reach higher-level systems.

The right level depends on the scope. A small device replacement may need focused configuration knowledge, while a machine retrofit or multi-master installation calls for experience with PLC mapping, safety boundaries, diagnostics and commissioning in live production environments.

Much of the IO-Link work can be handled remotely, including architecture reviews, IODD management, master configuration and PLC integration. On-site presence may still be needed in Germany for wiring checks, device tests, machine commissioning or issues that cannot be reproduced through remote access.

IO-Link appears in machine building, packaging, assembly, intralogistics and process-support applications. It is useful wherever teams need consistent sensor configuration, richer diagnostics or easier replacement across repeated machines and production cells.

Ask for a clear topology, documented port settings, verified IODD files and tested PLC mappings. A capable IO-Link professional should demonstrate device diagnostics, replacement behaviour and fault isolation, not just show that a sensor produces a value during a basic test.

Typical IO-Link challenges include incompatible IODD files, incorrect port modes, missing PLC data, unsupported device functions and unclear diagnostic codes. Good preparation includes checking master capabilities, device compatibility, network mappings and commissioning access before equipment arrives on site.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used IO-Link in their recent projects is 81 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 651 € based on an 8-hour working day.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used IO-Link in their recent projects have 17 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 1 year.
