Data Security

Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Vulnerability Management with the Greenbone Ecosystem

Greenbone provides open and commercial solutions to detect security exposures across networks. Built originally around OpenVAS, the Greenbone Community Edition and Enterprise appliances analyze endpoints, services, and configurations. Security teams deploy it to spot missing patches, weak ciphers, and misconfigured daemons.

Core Technologies in the Architecture

The stack relies on the Greenbone Vulnerability Management framework to organize scans and asset inventories. Practitioners interact via the Greenbone Security Assistant web front end and the python-gvm control library. Underneath, scanner components execute thousands of Network Vulnerability Tests updated daily through feed services.

Typical Project Engagements

  • Setting up distributed sensors across complex corporate subnets and cloud accounts
  • Customizing scan configs, schedules, and targets to balance scanner load
  • Writing GMP scripts in Python to pull scan metrics into central dashboards
  • Tuning detection rules to suppress persistent false positives across production systems

Enterprise Adoption in Germany

Organizations in Germany frequently choose this solution due to its German engineering roots and clear compliance alignments. The software avoids mandatory data routing through external third-party clouds, supporting internal policies for IT-Grundschutz and NIS2 audits. Freelance support proves critical during initial cluster setups and audits.

Technical Prerequisites and Integrations

Effective implementation requires deep familiarity with Linux system administration, PostgreSQL, and TLS inspection boundaries. Scanning results must funnel into ticket trackers like Jira or SIEM platforms like Splunk, Graylog, and Wazuh. Specialists create reliable bridges between scanner outputs and operational remediation workflows.

Hallmarks of Seasoned Specialists

Top practitioners distinguish themselves through pragmatic scan tuning rather than default full-throttle scans. They prevent service disruptions by scheduling non-intrusive tests during off-peak hours and refining credentials for authenticated sweeps. Their reports translate raw vulnerability feeds into prioritized remediation tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Need clarity? These are the questions we hear most often about Greenbone.

Originally, OpenVAS existed as a standalone vulnerability scanner before evolving into the modular open-source engine powering the platform. Today, Greenbone develops the underlying framework, maintains the commercial enterprise appliances, and curates the daily vulnerability feeds that power both community and enterprise scanners.

Enterprises in Germany often rely on Greenbone to satisfy baseline auditing mandates outlined by BSI IT-Grundschutz and ISO 27001. Because the entire scanning and storage stack can operate fully on-premises without cloud telemetry, it helps organizations retain strict control over sensitive vulnerability data.

Aggressive testing routines can overwhelm fragile network services or trigger firewall rate limits. An experienced Greenbone specialist configures scan policies to omit disruptive safe-check overrides and throttles parallel host checks to keep critical production environments stable.

Unauthenticated sweeps evaluate open ports and banner information from an external network view. By configuring Greenbone Vulnerability Management with local credentials over SSH or WMI, the system performs deep packetless software inventory checks that expose missing internal operating system patches with far higher accuracy.

Experts routinely use the python-gvm library to control targets, schedules, and reporting via the Greenbone Management Protocol. This setup allows continuous scanning to trigger automatically within CI/CD pipelines or nightly cron tasks without requiring manual web console interactions.

While proprietary alternatives like Tenable Nessus and Qualys rely heavily on vendor-hosted cloud models, Greenbone Enterprise provides self-hosted software and hardware appliances with full inspection transparency. Teams gain flexible feed licensing and full API control without sending corporate asset data to external multi-tenant platforms.

Most configuration, tuning, and report generation using Greenbone occurs remotely over secure administrative jump hosts or VPN tunnels. Occasionally, German enterprises handling highly classified segments or strict defense sector data may request temporary on-site visits for physical appliance provisioning.

Look for proven experience across Linux administration, system hardening, and enterprise network architecture alongside direct Greenbone usage. A qualified professional should demonstrate fluency in scripting automated report exports and handling PostgreSQL database maintenance for large vulnerability catalogs.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Greenbone in their recent projects is 108 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 864 € based on an 8-hour working day.
