Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Network Discovery

Nmap, short for Network Mapper, is an open-source tool for discovering hosts and services on computer networks. It identifies reachable systems, open ports, service versions and operating system signals through controlled probes. Companies use its results to understand network exposure before security testing, migration or operational change.

Scanning Capabilities

Nmap supports host discovery, port scanning, service detection, version detection and operating system fingerprinting. Specialists choose scan methods carefully to balance coverage, speed and operational safety. Results can be exported for review or integrated into assessment workflows through XML, grepable output and normal text reports.

NSE And Tooling

The Nmap Scripting Engine extends scans with scripts for service checks, vulnerability research, authentication testing and configuration review. Strong professionals work comfortably with Linux, TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, routing and shell automation. They may also connect Nmap findings with tools such as Wireshark, OpenVAS, Nessus or SIEM systems.

Practical Use Cases

  • Inventory hosts and exposed services across internal networks
  • Validate firewall rules, segmentation and attack surface changes
  • Support penetration tests and vulnerability assessments
  • Check cloud, data centre and hybrid network visibility
  • Produce evidence for remediation and security reviews

Nmap is useful in infrastructure audits, incident response and release checks. In Germany, specialists may support manufacturers, financial organisations, healthcare providers and public-sector teams, remotely or alongside local security and infrastructure groups.

When Expertise Helps

Companies bring in freelance Nmap expertise when an assessment needs impartial coverage, when network documentation is incomplete or when internal teams lack time for repeatable scanning. Specialists can define safe scan scopes, interpret ambiguous results and separate genuine exposure from filtered or misleading responses. They also help turn raw findings into actions for infrastructure and security teams.

Quality Signals

A capable professional treats Nmap as an assessment instrument rather than a button to press. They confirm authorisation, document scope, account for rate limits and fragile systems, and explain the limits of fingerprinting. Look for clear reporting, reproducible commands, careful NSE selection and the ability to connect technical findings with business risk. For German projects, agree early on remote access, on-site needs and the working language.

Frequently asked questions

Curious about Nmap? Here are the answers that come up again and again.

Nmap is used to discover hosts, identify open ports and determine which services may be reachable on a network. Companies use it for asset inventory, firewall validation, segmentation checks, penetration-test support and incident investigation.

Nmap focuses first on network discovery, port states and service identification, while vulnerability scanners typically add broader checks against known weaknesses. Nmap can extend its work with NSE scripts, but it does not replace a full vulnerability-management process.

An Nmap specialist should understand TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, Linux and common network services. Experience with tools such as Wireshark, Nessus, OpenVAS, cloud networking and SIEM workflows helps turn scan output into useful security decisions.

The right Nmap experience depends on scope, not a fixed duration. A simple inventory needs disciplined scanning and reporting, while a segmented enterprise assessment requires strong knowledge of authorisation, scan impact, service interpretation and remediation planning.

Nmap work can often be completed remotely when the specialist receives approved access through a secure jump host, VPN or controlled testing environment. On-site collaboration may help with restricted networks, sensitive systems or workshops, and German or English working requirements should be agreed in advance.

Before using Nmap, define written authorisation, target ranges, excluded systems, scan windows and escalation contacts. Aggressive probes or scripts can create noise and may affect fragile services, so an expert should select methods that fit the environment.

Good Nmap work includes a clear scope, reproducible commands, explained limitations and evidence for each important finding. The report should distinguish filtered ports, detected services and confirmed weaknesses, then link relevant observations to practical remediation.

Nmap can help review reachable services in cloud and hybrid environments, but results depend on routing, security groups, network access controls and provider boundaries. A specialist should combine scans with cloud inventory and configuration review rather than treating one scan as a complete asset picture.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects is 79 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 634 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects, 80% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 50% hold at least a Master's degree, and 10% hold a doctorate.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects have 15 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 2.7 years.

The most common languages among freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects are English (100%), German (95%), and Spanish (18%).

The most common industries among freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects are Information Technology (95%), Banking and Finance (45%), and Transportation (36%).

The most common business areas among freelancers in Germany who have used Nmap in their recent projects are Information Technology (100%), Quality Assurance (59%), and Operations (50%).
