- Project: communication interface for high-value payment transactions.
- The German Bundesbank wanted communication software that had already been ported from OS/390 to Java to be extended. This software transports payment data from high-value payment transactions between applications that supply the applications with payment data as part of the intranet.
- The software is based on WebsphereMQ as the transport medium and offers interfaces for Java applications via RMI. Each transport is represented as an order, and an order management system is provided, with status displays that give the applications information about the progress of the order.
- The task was to adapt and extend the existing application in order to prepare the software for future tasks. The main part was to integrate a separate database, since until then the old application on OS/390 and the Java application on AIX had used the same database and the Java version was therefore tied to the OS/390 location.
- In addition, the architecture was extended and redesigned with regard to layer separation in preparation for connection to EJB interfaces. The transaction layer was mapped with the help of DAOs and DMOs and also made configurable, so that resources such as MQ and DB connections could also be made available within a J2EE context. The business logic was restructured and simplified with the help of the Command pattern and a Template Method.
- In addition to the connection through EJBs, the extensions included the implementation of a new file-based interface via FTP and the integration of SAP applications with the help of R3/Link. Converters were written that are able to deliver IDoc packages and implement the connection to R3/Link.
- In addition, the Ant tool was introduced to automate build and delivery, and the JUnit test framework was integrated for quality assurance.

- New development of the existing e-commerce portal with extended community features. The overall system is used to support overweight patients over the internet. Chats, forums, and interactive expert systems are used for communication and advice. Products are to be sold through a shop. A fee system should be able to collect due charges.
- Java Enterprise Beans were chosen as the base architecture. Using Data-Access and Data-Model objects, the transaction layer was built with the help of an OR mapping framework. The business logic was stored in stateless session beans. Access through the controller layer takes place via the Apache Struts tag libraries with the help of Java Server Pages (JSPs).
- To keep the JSPs free of Java code, custom tag libraries were developed. This made it possible to ensure that project members without Java knowledge could create JSPs.
- The e-commerce components include a shop and a billing system that communicate over secure connections with banks and partner companies.
- In the community features area, a chat system is worth mentioning, which was implemented using Java Message Services. Administration was enabled through the Java Management Extension.
- The Model-View-Controller concept was successfully implemented through strict separation of the layers.
- In addition to developing the architecture and object model in UML, I also took over the design of the data model. I was also responsible for configuring the Ant build tool and automating the JUnit test framework for quality assurance. Besides my role as reviewer, I developed a large part of the JMS-based chat.

- Project: Mobile portal.
- For a mobile telecommunications company, a mobile portal was to be developed that combines community, messaging, office, and content services. The main focus in the concept was above all on device independence of the delivered results, mass processing, and the extensibility and configurability of the overall framework.
- In addition to connecting the WAP portal to the WebLogic Servlet Engine and the business logic in the EJBs, an administrative JMS-based framework was developed that implements monitoring, administration, and connectivity to content partners and the SMS gateway.
- My area of responsibility was the latter part, which was connected to the "rest" of the business logic via EJBs. The framework itself consists of "plain" Java applications that communicate via RMI and JMS.
- Monitoring and administrative tasks (start, stop, reload) are handled by a server that was made fail-safe by a watchdog process. I also evaluated the message brokers.
- The other services/applications were SMS applications such as chat, content lookup, and games via SMS, as well as the interface to the customer's content partners to retrieve current data. A key challenge in the implementation was solving the mass processing problem, which was handled through caching and appropriate distribution routines.
- To display the content independently of the device, an XML/XSLT transformation was used. To connect to the SMS gateway, the CIMD2 protocol from Nokia was implemented.
- In the final part of the project, the application was moved to a high-availability platform across the different parts with a Linux cluster. Ant was also used as the build tool, and the JUnit framework was used for quality assurance and testing.

- For an internet agency, a server was to be developed that is able to "host" customer pages and provide them with an additional, standardized range of services.
- These services for customers included email forms for customer contact, data mining functions, and a forum solution. The implementation was to develop a framework that ensures administration and extensibility on the side of the internet agency.
- For the implementation, Perl and Apache with an embedded Perl module were used based on the available skills. The MySQL database was used.
- The implementation was carried out by the internal employees after the architecture, data model, and class design had been developed.
- The architecture was based on a CORBA-distributed solution, since the server was designed to be scalable. In addition to representing the database layer using the DAO/DMO pattern, a framework was developed for HTTP form-based services that represents the HTTP forms in Perl classes.

- The catering business required calculation software that allows menus and their costs to be calculated based on a recipe database.

- Based on the stored prices and the preparation requirements, a kitchen plan and price calculation were output.

- During the picking of meal packages, a personal letter from the chef was to comment on the menu selection. Only two seconds passed between scanning the package and the machine inserting the letter. In this time, the letter had to be fully created and printed. Windows 95 was specified as the target system.
- Implementation: An algorithm was designed that makes a suitable selection of text blocks and puts them together into a letter. To save print time, the Windows print function was not used. Instead, the letter was created in PCL5 and copied to the printer as a raw file. This task was handled by a server program.

- Aircraft models designed in MSC-Patran were to be transformed into a browser-compatible representation for easier viewing and visualization.
- VRML was chosen as the target format, with display possible in Java3D.
- The raw data described the model in very small polygon sections, which caused a very large amount of data. Therefore, an optimization was used to minimize the amount of data in the target model.
- In addition, an AWT application was created to configure the generation and view the visualization with Java3D. This software runs as an applet in the browser.

- Development of an eCommerce portal with an online shop and chat system. The overall system serves to support overweight patients over the internet.
- In the evaluation phase, Apple's WebObjects was also considered. However, this option was rejected because of the complexity of the software and budget issues.
- Therefore, a Servlet/JSP based architecture with direct database access from the servlet layer was chosen. Database access was encapsulated in suitable DAO/DMO objects.
- The MVC architecture was also implemented here, with the view and controller in the JSPs/servlets and the model represented in the transaction layer behind them.

For the moderators, a Java Swing application was created that provided more advanced functions such as blocking users and multimedia features with images and animations to illustrate topics.

- Project: Law office software.
- Law firm software based on office applications.
- A document management system was created with links to the client, lawyer and court databases.

Design, Development and Training
CAD - Service Provider
Project: Training. For the AutoCAD service provider, customers of the developed software were trained on AutoCAD and the planning software.
Project: Industry software for AutoCAD. A special solution for commercial kitchen planning offices and service providers was to be created, supporting the entire project flow from quote, planning, calculation, parts lists, and invoicing. MS Access and AutoCAD were given as requirements. Building on an existing supporting solution, a master data management for articles, project management, quote calculation based on the parts lists from CAD, and invoicing were implemented. AutoCAD Lisp and C++ were used to take the drawing to be created directly from the master data and use it. This meant the parts list, and thus the basis for quote calculation, was already available. The calculation supports list price and purchase price based calculations and also includes target price calculation, where the prices of individual items are adjusted to a specified target price.
