Data Security

Hamburg
Enrique Gallardo

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Identity control

Microsoft Entra ID is the identity layer for Microsoft 365, Azure, and many business apps. It manages sign-in, access, and user identity across cloud services, hybrid setups, and partner connections. Companies use it to keep logins consistent and to control who can reach what.

Core work

  • Single sign-on for internal and external apps
  • Multi-factor authentication and conditional access
  • User, group, and role access management
  • App registrations and enterprise app setup
  • Hybrid identity with on-premises directories

Strong specialists know how to shape access rules without blocking work. They also understand Microsoft Entra, Azure AD, and the older Azure Active Directory name that still appears in documentation and project plans.

Where it fits

Entra ID sits in the Microsoft cloud stack, but it also connects to many other systems. It is often part of security, workplace, and infrastructure work where identity is the first control point. That makes it central for companies that need reliable access across devices, locations, and apps.

When to bring in help

  • You are moving from legacy identity to Microsoft Entra ID
  • You need clean SSO and MFA for a mixed app landscape
  • You must tighten access policies after a security review
  • You are connecting cloud and on-premises identities
  • Your team needs help with tenant design or troubleshooting

Freelance expertise is useful when identity changes must be done carefully and with little disruption. In Hamburg, that often matters for organizations with Microsoft-heavy workplaces, international teams, or regulated access needs.

What good experts do

Good professionals work with the details: tenant structure, groups, roles, claims, app permissions, and policy logic. They test sign-in paths, review audit logs, and check that users get the right access in the right context. They also document the setup so internal teams can maintain it.

Common deliverables

A strong Microsoft Entra ID specialist can deliver clear outcomes, such as access policies, SSO connections, guest user setup, federation fixes, and migration support from Azure AD terminology and tooling. For Hamburg-based teams, remote work is often enough, but on-site sessions help when identity issues touch many departments or need stakeholder alignment.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions that come up most around Microsoft Entra ID.

Microsoft Entra ID is used to control sign-in and access across Microsoft 365, Azure, and connected business apps. It helps companies enforce single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, conditional access, and role-based access in one place.

Microsoft renamed Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID. In real projects, both names still appear, especially in older guides, portal labels, and documentation. A good specialist understands both terms and can work through legacy references without confusion.

A strong Microsoft Entra ID expert usually also knows Azure, Microsoft 365, app registration, SAML, OAuth, OpenID Connect, and basic security logging. Hybrid identity knowledge matters too when on-premises directories still play a role.

The right depth depends on the task. Basic user and group setup is different from tenant redesign, hybrid identity, or conditional access rollout. For security-sensitive changes, you want someone who has handled real access policy work and troubleshooting.

Bring in Microsoft Entra ID expertise when your team needs focused help for migrations, access policy changes, SSO setup, or sign-in troubleshooting. Freelancers are also useful when internal staff know the business but need a specialist for the identity layer itself.

Yes, Microsoft Entra ID work is often suitable for remote delivery because much of it happens in portals, logs, and configuration. On-site time can still help when access rules affect many teams or when sign-off needs close coordination, including in Hamburg offices.

Look for clean tenant design, secure but usable access rules, and clear documentation. A good Microsoft Entra ID specialist explains why a policy exists, tests sign-in paths, and can show how they handled real-world issues like guest access, MFA rollout, or conditional access conflicts.

Microsoft Entra ID goes beyond basic account handling by managing identity across apps, devices, and security policies. It is the better fit when you need SSO, conditional access, external collaboration, and tighter control over authentication in one system.
