Data Security

Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

What DLP does

Data Loss Prevention, commonly called DLP, identifies, monitors and protects sensitive information wherever it is stored, used or shared. Policies can detect personal data, financial records, intellectual property and confidential business material, then block, warn about or record risky actions. DLP supports compliance, insider-risk reduction and controlled collaboration without stopping legitimate work.

Core controls

DLP applies rules to content and context across endpoints, networks, email and cloud applications. Strong implementations classify data, define acceptable use and create clear responses for incidents. Controls may include discovery scans, clipboard restrictions, removable-media controls, email inspection, print monitoring and quarantine workflows.

  • Discover sensitive data in files, repositories and cloud storage
  • Apply policies to email, endpoints, SaaS tools and web traffic
  • Route alerts into investigation and response processes
  • Tune rules to reduce false positives and user disruption

Ecosystem and tooling

The ecosystem includes Microsoft Purview Information Protection and DLP, Symantec Data Loss Prevention, Forcepoint DLP, Broadcom tools and endpoint security suites with DLP functions. Projects often connect identity providers, SIEM platforms, cloud access security controls, data classification services and ticketing systems. Specialists also work with regex, exact data matching, fingerprinting and machine-learning-assisted detection.

When expertise matters

Companies bring in freelance DLP expertise during cloud migrations, security programme changes, mergers, audits or major data-classification projects. The work may involve policy design, tenant configuration, endpoint rollout, incident playbooks or a review of existing controls. In Germany, remote delivery is common, while workshops with security, legal and data-protection teams may benefit from on-site collaboration and German-language communication.

  • Sensitive data is spreading across SaaS applications and unmanaged devices
  • DLP alerts are numerous but difficult to investigate
  • Business teams need secure sharing without blanket blocking
  • A new privacy, security or compliance requirement changes control priorities

Project deliverables

A DLP professional can produce a data inventory, classification model, policy catalogue and exception process. Other deliverables include configured detection rules, endpoint and cloud integrations, dashboards, escalation paths, user guidance and operational runbooks. They should document assumptions and test policies with realistic business flows before enforcement begins.

What strong specialists bring

Strong specialists combine information security with practical knowledge of identity, endpoints, networking, cloud services and data governance. They understand how DLP policies affect sales, finance, research and support teams, and explain trade-offs in clear language. Look for evidence of measured rollouts, careful tuning, useful incident context and collaboration with privacy and legal stakeholders.

Frequently asked questions

Key details about Data Loss Prevention, drawn from the questions we get asked most.

Data Loss Prevention is used to prevent sensitive information from leaving approved systems or reaching the wrong people. It can identify regulated personal data, source material, financial records or confidential documents and then alert, block, encrypt or quarantine a transfer.

DLP focuses on detecting risky content use and movement, including actions that happen before or alongside sharing. Encryption protects data from unauthorized reading, while rights management controls access and permitted actions after a file is shared. Companies often combine these controls rather than choose only one.

A strong Data Loss Prevention specialist should understand identity and access management, endpoint security, cloud services, SIEM workflows and data classification. Knowledge of Microsoft Purview, Symantec, Forcepoint, regex, exact data matching and incident response is also useful. Privacy and governance experience helps turn technical rules into workable policies.

The required depth depends on scope. A focused policy review may need configuration and investigation skills, while a multi-cloud rollout requires experience with classification, endpoint deployment, integrations, testing and change management. Ask for examples of comparable controls and measurable improvements in alert quality rather than relying only on a tool badge.

Data Loss Prevention work is often suitable for remote collaboration when the specialist can access a controlled tenant, documentation and test data. On-site sessions may still help with stakeholder workshops, sensitive environments or endpoint rollout planning. German-language communication can be valuable when policies involve local business, privacy or works-council stakeholders.

Good DLP work begins with clear data definitions, risk-based policies and documented exceptions. Review how the specialist tests rules, handles false positives, records incident context and measures user impact. Quality also means that operations teams can maintain the policies after the project ends.

A common Data Loss Prevention mistake is enabling broad blocking before understanding business workflows and data ownership. Other problems include weak classification, duplicate rules, unclear exception approval and alerts without an investigation process. A staged rollout with monitoring, user communication and regular tuning is safer.

For DLP, provide the technology stack, data locations, priority risks, regulatory context, endpoint and cloud scope, current policies and expected deliverables. Explain who owns security, privacy and business approvals, plus any access or residency constraints. This lets the specialist assess the work accurately and plan discovery before changing controls.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Data Loss Prevention in their recent projects is 118 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 945 € based on an 8-hour working day.
