Data Security

Hamburg
Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Secure Connectivity

A VPN, or virtual private network, creates an encrypted connection between users, devices, offices or cloud environments. It protects data in transit and gives authorized people access to internal services without exposing those services directly to the public internet. The right design balances security, performance and ease of use.

Common Deployments

Companies use VPN technology for remote work, site-to-site connectivity, partner access and administration of private infrastructure. It can link branch offices, connect production networks to cloud resources and protect access from untrusted networks.

  • Remote access for distributed teams
  • Site-to-site links between offices and data centers
  • Secure access to cloud and private services
  • Encrypted connections for external partners

Protocols and Tools

Strong professionals work with technologies such as IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard and SSL VPN solutions. They configure authentication, certificates, routing, DNS, firewall rules and split tunneling. They may also integrate identity providers, mobile device management, network monitoring and cloud networking services.

When Expertise Helps

Freelance expertise is useful when a company is replacing legacy remote access, expanding into cloud infrastructure or supporting a larger distributed workforce. Specialists can review an existing design, plan migration with limited disruption and document operational procedures. In Hamburg, they may also support local teams on site while coordinating securely with remote stakeholders.

  • Resolve unstable tunnels and slow connections
  • Replace outdated or difficult-to-maintain VPN setups
  • Prepare access controls for audits and security reviews
  • Standardize configurations across locations

Reliable Operations

A VPN is only effective when access is controlled and its connections remain observable. Experienced professionals define least-privilege rules, strong authentication, certificate lifecycles, logging and incident procedures. They test failover, verify routing behavior and ensure that security controls do not block legitimate business traffic.

Choosing a Specialist

Look for a professional who can explain network flows clearly and connect VPN decisions to business requirements. Relevant experience includes firewalls, routing, cloud platforms, identity systems and endpoint security. Ask for evidence of documented configurations, tested recovery steps and practical troubleshooting across the environments your company uses. Remote delivery can work well, while on-site collaboration in Hamburg may help with office networks, hardware and stakeholder workshops.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about VPN? Start with the answers below.

A VPN encrypts traffic and provides controlled access to private networks, applications and cloud resources. Companies commonly use it for remote work, site-to-site connectivity, partner access and secure infrastructure administration.

A VPN usually grants access to a network segment after a user or device is authenticated, while zero-trust access focuses on each application, identity and request. The better choice depends on the required access model, existing identity controls and the systems that must be reached.

A strong VPN professional should understand routing, firewalls, DNS, identity and access management, certificates and endpoint security. Cloud networking, monitoring and incident response are also valuable when connections support production systems.

A VPN project needs enough practical experience to assess network topology, authentication, routing and failure scenarios rather than simply install a client. More complex environments call for a specialist who has handled migrations, hybrid cloud links, high availability and documented recovery procedures.

Yes, much of a VPN engagement can be completed remotely through secure administrative access, workshops and shared documentation. On-site work in Hamburg can still be useful for office network changes, hardware checks or collaboration with local infrastructure teams.

Ask a VPN freelancer to explain comparable network designs, authentication choices, logging and rollback plans in clear terms. Review the quality of their documentation and confirm that they can work within your security, change-management and access requirements.

A well-designed VPN uses strong authentication, limited access rights, protected keys, current protocols and useful monitoring. Quality also shows in tested failover, clear ownership of certificates and logs that support investigation without exposing unnecessary data.

A VPN specialist may deliver an architecture review, configuration, migration plan, access policy, monitoring setup and operational documentation. They can also troubleshoot tunnel failures, improve performance and train internal teams to manage the environment safely.
