Security Architect at Capgemini
I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology
What MFA does
Multi-Factor Authentication, commonly called MFA or two-factor authentication (2FA), verifies identity with more than one independent factor. These factors can include a password, a registered device, a security key, a biometric signal or a trusted authenticator app. MFA protects workforce accounts, customer portals, cloud consoles and privileged access when passwords are exposed.
Where it is used
MFA belongs in any system where account takeover could expose data, money or operational control. Typical delivery work includes:
- Workforce sign-in for SaaS tools, VPNs and internal applications
- Customer authentication for banking, commerce and subscription services
- Privileged access for cloud, infrastructure and administration consoles
- Step-up verification for sensitive actions, payments or account changes
Ecosystem and standards
Strong specialists work across identity and access management systems such as Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Auth0, Keycloak and Google Cloud Identity. They connect applications through SAML, OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, then implement methods such as TOTP, push approval, passkeys and FIDO2 security keys. Good work also covers directory services, single sign-on, device trust and recovery flows.
When expertise helps
Companies bring in freelance expertise during identity migrations, cloud adoption, compliance projects, product launches and security improvements. Specialist support is also valuable when MFA creates user friction, recovery is unsafe, legacy applications cannot use modern protocols or a rollout must span employees, partners and customers. In Hamburg, on-site workshops can complement remote delivery for teams that need close coordination across security, IT and product functions.
What delivery includes
A professional begins with access risks, user groups and existing identity providers. The work may include an authentication design, policy configuration, application integration, enrollment journeys, fallback controls, test cases, documentation and rollout support. Reliable delivery also defines how lost devices, locked-out users, service accounts and emergency access are handled.
Signs of strong specialists
Look for professionals who can explain security decisions in clear terms and balance protection with usable sign-in flows. They should understand threat models, phishing resistance, session management, audit trails and identity lifecycle controls. Ask for evidence of careful testing across browsers, devices and recovery scenarios, plus a practical plan for monitoring adoption, investigating failed challenges and retiring weak methods.
Frequently asked questions
Need clarity? These are the questions we hear most often about Multi-Factor Authentication.
Multi-Factor Authentication is used to verify a person with multiple independent factors before granting access. Companies apply it to employee accounts, customer portals, cloud consoles, privileged systems and sensitive actions such as payments or profile changes.
MFA adds identity checks beyond a password, while single sign-on centralizes access across applications. Passwordless access removes the password from the main flow and can still use multiple factors, such as a passkey and a device or biometric check. These approaches often work together rather than replace one another.
A strong Multi-Factor Authentication specialist usually understands identity and access management, directory services, SAML, OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. Useful adjacent skills include Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Auth0, Keycloak, device management, cloud security, session controls and incident response.
The right level depends on scope, risk and the systems involved. A focused application integration may need a specialist who can configure protocols and test user flows, while a workforce or customer rollout needs broader expertise in policy design, migration, recovery, communications and operational support.
MFA projects can usually be delivered remotely through secure workshops, configuration sessions and documented testing. Hamburg-based teams may still prefer on-site collaboration for identity discovery, stakeholder alignment or rollout planning. Agree on access procedures, working language and data-handling rules before the engagement starts.
Multi-Factor Authentication methods should reflect threat level, user devices, application support and recovery needs. Passkeys and FIDO2 security keys offer strong phishing resistance, while authenticator apps and TOTP can support broader compatibility. SMS may be easy to deploy but is generally weaker against several attack paths.
Ask how the specialist will model threats, protect recovery, handle emergency access and test enrollment across real devices. A capable MFA professional should provide clear design decisions, rollout controls, auditability and a plan for measuring failed challenges without weakening security.
A Multi-Factor Authentication freelancer should clarify the user populations, identity provider, application protocols, regulatory constraints, supported devices and ownership of production changes. They should also confirm who handles helpdesk recovery, incident escalation, testing approval and communication during rollout.
