Enrique Gallardo

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

What it is

Industrial control systems connect machines, sensors, controllers, and supervisory software so physical processes can run safely and consistently. They sit at the heart of factories, utilities, water treatment, logistics, and process plants.

Common systems

  • PLC logic for local machine control
  • SCADA for monitoring and operator control
  • DCS for distributed process operations
  • HMI screens and alarm handling
  • OT network integration and segmentation

When specialists help

Companies bring in freelance expertise during plant upgrades, control migrations, outages, audits, and production expansion. In Germany, this often means working around manufacturing, energy, automotive supply chains, and industrial automation projects where downtime must stay low.

Strong skill set

A strong specialist understands control logic, safety concepts, field devices, industrial protocols, and change control. They can read legacy documentation, troubleshoot faults on site, and work with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams without slowing production.

Ecosystem and tooling

Industrial control work often involves Siemens, Schneider Electric, Rockwell Automation, ABB, and similar environments. It may also include OPC UA, Modbus, Profibus, industrial Ethernet, historian systems, alarm management, and backup or restore routines for controllers and stations.

What good delivery looks like

Good professionals leave stable systems and clear handover material. They document changes, test alarms and failover paths, and respect production windows. For companies hiring in Germany, clear communication in English and often German helps keep plant teams aligned.

Frequently asked questions

Curious about Industrial Control System? Here are the answers that come up again and again.

A Industrial Control System is used to monitor and control physical processes such as production lines, pumps, valves, conveyors, and building or utility equipment. It combines controllers, operator screens, alarms, and industrial networks so the process can run safely and predictably.

Industrial Control System is the broader term. SCADA usually focuses on supervision and remote monitoring, while DCS is common in continuous process plants with distributed control across many loops. In practice, companies often need specialists who understand all three terms because projects mix them.

Bring in a Industrial Control System specialist when you face a migration, a plant expansion, a control fault, a legacy system update, or a temporary lack of in-house capacity. Freelancers are also useful when you need focused support for commissioning, documentation, or troubleshooting without hiring permanently.

A strong Industrial Control System professional usually brings PLC programming, SCADA configuration, OT networking, field instrumentation, and basic cybersecurity awareness. Knowledge of safety systems, alarms, historians, and vendor tools is often important too, depending on the plant.

Industrial Control System work is often a mix of both. Logic review, documentation, and some SCADA tasks can be done remotely, but commissioning, testing, and fault finding on live equipment usually need on-site access. In Germany, many projects expect both remote preparation and local plant presence.

A Industrial Control System project that touches live operations needs someone who has handled similar environments before, especially if downtime is costly. For smaller changes, a specialist with strong vendor and plant experience may be enough, while larger migrations need someone who can manage risk, testing, and handover carefully.

For Industrial Control System work, look for clear documentation, safe change handling, and evidence of work in similar plant environments. Good specialists explain risks, test recovery paths, and can talk through alarms, interlocks, backups, and commissioning steps in plain language.

Before accepting a Industrial Control System assignment, freelancers usually want to know the site type, the vendor stack, whether there is live production, and how much access they will get. They also ask about on-site expectations, language needs, and who signs off changes.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects is 118 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 943 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects, 96% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 52% hold at least a Master's degree, and 4% hold a doctorate.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects have 21 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 3.5 years.

The most common languages among freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects are German (100%), English (100%), and Spanish (23%).

The most common industries among freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects are Professional Services (83%), Information Technology (65%), and Banking and Finance (58%).

The most common business areas among freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects are Project Management (85%), Information Technology (83%), and Audit (65%).
