Data Security

Hamburg
Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Operational Technology and Plant Automation

An Industrial Control System connects operational equipment with automated supervisory software. These setups govern real-time manufacturing, energy grids, water utilities, and chemical processing facilities. Modern deployments bridge local programmable controllers with centralized management layers to maintain continuous, automated throughput across physical assets.

Core Technologies and Field Architectures

Industrial automation relies on tightly coupled hardware and software layers designed for deterministic execution and fault tolerance. Professionals working in this domain configure programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems, and human-machine interfaces across robust field networks.

  • Programmable logic controllers and distributed control systems
  • SCADA supervisory hosts and operator HMI terminals
  • Industrial fieldbuses including PROFINET, PROFIBUS, and Modbus TCP
  • Safety instrumented systems adhering to IEC 61508 standards
  • OPC UA communication protocols for vertical OT and IT bridging

Industrial Applications in Germany

Manufacturing plants in Germany rely heavily on automation engineering within automotive assembly, machine tooling, and chemical processing. Facilities require reliable hardware-in-the-loop integration and adherence to European functional safety norms. Modernization efforts focus on connecting legacy plant floors to broader telemetry platforms without interrupting active shop-floor operations.

When Organizations Hire External ICS Specialists

Internal teams often face bandwidth constraints during major greenfield commissioning projects or complete plant retrofits. Companies bring in independent specialists to design failover logic, migrate legacy control software, or lead targeted operational technology security assessments across high-value physical lines.

Operational Technology Hardening and Compliance

Connecting factory floors to enterprise networks introduces critical attack surfaces that demand rigorous network segmentation. Seasoned professionals apply the IEC 62443 standard framework to enforce the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture, isolate safety systems, and establish secure remote maintenance conduits for external vendors.

Characteristics of Proven Automation Professionals

Leading specialists demonstrate structured programming mastery across IEC 61131-3 languages such as structured text and ladder diagram. They understand electrical schematics, manage fieldbus diagnostics under time pressure, and systematically troubleshoot physical inputs, outputs, and sensor instrumentation without risking equipment damage.

Frequently asked questions

Curious about Industrial Control System? Here are the answers that come up again and again.

An industrial control system comprises field sensors, actuators, programmable logic controllers, and distributed control systems that execute real-time control loops. Above the field level, supervisory control and data acquisition systems and operator interfaces aggregate telemetry to provide plant-wide operational visibility.

While both manage automation, SCADA systems typically handle geographically dispersed assets with latency-tolerant communication loops. A DCS is tightly integrated within a single plant facility, prioritizing high-speed, deterministic process control across continuous operations such as refining or chemical production.

Candidates working on an industrial control system should demonstrate strong expertise in IEC 61131-3 programming languages, vendor-specific engineering suites like Siemens TIA Portal, and industrial communication protocols. Practical knowledge of network segmentation under IEC 62443 is equally vital.

Initial architecture design, logic coding, and simulated testing often proceed remotely. However, physical commissioning, loop checks, and factory acceptance testing in Germany generally require hands-on presence directly on the factory floor.

Enterprise IT focuses on data confidentiality, whereas an ICS prioritizes operational availability, deterministic timing, and physical safety. Security controls on operational networks must never interrupt active manufacturing processes or introduce latency into safety-critical control loops.

While technical documentation and software interfaces are predominantly in English, working on an industrial control system in Germany often requires German language proficiency to collaborate effectively with local plant technicians, maintenance staff, and safety officers.

Specialists verify that logic changes comply with safety standards such as ISO 13849 and IEC 62061. An ICS setup isolates safety instrumented functions on dedicated safety PLCs and emergency stop circuits, ensuring basic control loops cannot override plant trip thresholds.

Look for structured, modular code within PLC programming environments and a disciplined approach to version management. Experienced operational technology professionals quickly trace fieldbus faults, document input and output mappings thoroughly, and maintain clean separation between control logic and user interface layers.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Industrial Control System in their recent projects is 112 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 896 € based on an 8-hour working day.
