Data Security

Enrique Gallardo

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

DNS basics

DNS, the Domain Name System, turns names into IP addresses and other records. It is the layer that keeps websites, email, APIs, and internal services reachable by name instead of by address.

Common work

  • Domain and subdomain record management
  • Mail routing with MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC support
  • Resolver and cache configuration
  • DNSSEC signing and validation
  • Migration between providers such as BIND, PowerDNS, Route 53, and Cloudflare DNS

When experts help

Companies bring in freelance specialists when a launch, migration, or outage touches DNS. Small changes can break service across web, mail, and VPN access, so careful planning matters.

Hamburg teams often need support across commerce, logistics, media, and SaaS environments where uptime and clean domain setup are essential.

Strong practical skills

Good professionals understand record sets, TTL strategy, zone file structure, recursion, caching, and propagation behavior. They can trace issues from registrar to authoritative server and explain what changed.

Quality signals

  • Clear incident analysis and root-cause thinking
  • Safe change windows and rollback planning
  • Familiarity with Linux networking and cloud DNS tooling
  • Careful handling of split-horizon and internal DNS
  • Solid documentation for future changes

Typical outcomes

A DNS specialist should leave behind stable zones, clean delegation, working mail delivery, and fewer surprises during releases. For larger estates, that may also include hardened DNSSEC, better redundancy, and simpler operations across providers.

Frequently asked questions

Need clarity? These are the questions we hear most often about DNS.

A strong DNS specialist manages the records that connect names to services. That usually includes A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and NS records, plus delegation, TTL tuning, and troubleshooting when something stops resolving.

Bring in DNS help when a migration, outage, launch, or mail issue depends on clean name resolution. Freelance support is also useful when you need a short, focused review of zone design, DNSSEC, or provider changes without hiring a permanent specialist.

DNS answers the question of where a name points. A CDN or reverse proxy sits later in the request path and handles delivery, caching, or traffic routing after resolution has already happened.

A good DNS freelancer usually knows Linux, cloud networking, mail authentication, and registrar workflows. Experience with BIND, PowerDNS, Route 53, Cloudflare DNS, or similar tooling is often important, along with log analysis and incident handling.

For a low-risk record update, an in-house team may be enough. For DNS changes tied to email, production cutovers, split-horizon setups, or security controls, a specialist reduces the chance of a hard-to-trace outage.

Most DNS work can be done remotely because the core tasks are configuration, validation, and troubleshooting. On-site collaboration in Hamburg can still help when the project involves internal stakeholders, change approvals, or wider infrastructure work.

Look for clear explanations, careful change plans, and a methodical way of tracing problems from registrar to authoritative server. A strong DNS professional also documents decisions, checks propagation, and understands how email, VPN, and public services depend on records.

A careful DNS freelancer will ask who controls the registrar, which providers host the zones, whether there is DNSSEC, and what services depend on the records. They should also ask about rollback options, maintenance windows, and any split-horizon or internal name resolution needs.
