Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the certification

What it proves

AWS Certified Security – Specialty is Amazon Web Services’ advanced certification for security work in AWS environments. It shows that a freelancer can design and operate secure cloud solutions, spot risks, and apply controls that protect workloads, identities, and data across AWS services.

Core skills

  • Secure IAM design, role-based access, and least-privilege access patterns
  • Encryption, key management, and secure handling of sensitive data
  • Logging, monitoring, detection, and incident response in AWS
  • Network protections, segmentation, and boundary controls
  • Security governance, risk awareness, and automation of controls

Typical profiles

People who hold this credential often work as cloud security engineers, security architects, DevOps security specialists, or consultants in regulated environments. They usually know how to review existing AWS setups, harden them, and guide teams through secure delivery without slowing down engineering work.

Where it matters

This certification is relevant when a company is moving sensitive workloads to AWS, reviewing a shared responsibility model, or preparing for audits and internal security reviews. In Germany, it is especially useful when projects need strong security expertise but the team wants to work with a freelancer remotely or in a hybrid setup.

What to expect from a holder

A freelancer with this certification should be able to discuss practical trade-offs, not just theory. Look for clear thinking around access control, detective controls, secure network design, incident handling, and the security impact of architectural decisions.

Related names

Searchers often use the short form AWS Security Specialty or the full AWS Certified Security – Specialty name. Both point to the same AWS credential, which focuses on security across AWS services rather than general cloud administration or basic AWS use.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about AWS Certified Security – Specialty? Start with the answers below.

AWS Certified Security – Specialty validates advanced security knowledge for AWS environments. A holder can design controls for identity, data, networks, monitoring, and incident response, and can apply those controls to real workloads rather than only describe them in theory.

The AWS Security Specialty is narrower and deeper than general AWS certifications. It focuses on security design and operations across AWS services, while broader certifications often cover architecture or administration more generally. That makes it a strong signal when security is the main concern.

A freelancer with AWS Certified Security – Specialty is a good fit when you need someone to review cloud security posture, improve access control, or support security-sensitive migrations. It is especially useful for security architects, cloud engineers, DevOps teams, and consultants working on regulated or sensitive systems.

This certification fits projects that need practical security decisions in AWS. Common examples include securing IAM, setting up logging and detection, hardening network boundaries, managing encryption, and preparing AWS environments for security reviews or audits.

Yes, hands-on experience matters a lot. AWS Certified Security – Specialty is not an entry-level credential; it assumes that the professional already understands AWS services and has worked with security controls in real environments. Strong familiarity with architecture, operations, and security best practices is important.

Preparation should combine AWS documentation, service-level security features, and practical lab work. Candidates usually benefit from reviewing IAM, KMS, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, security groups, network design, and incident response patterns in AWS, then testing those ideas in hands-on scenarios.

Like other AWS certifications, this credential is maintained through AWS’s current recertification path. Holders should expect to keep up with service changes and renewal requirements so the certification stays current with the AWS platform and its security features.

In Germany, AWS Certified Security – Specialty is especially valuable for companies that need strong cloud security expertise but want flexible delivery. It is a good fit for remote or hybrid collaboration, and it helps when teams want clear communication in English across security, engineering, and compliance stakeholders.

The average hourly rate for freelancers with AWS Certified Security – Specialty in Germany is 102 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 818 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers with AWS Certified Security – Specialty in Germany, 82% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 55% hold at least a Master's degree, and 9% hold a doctorate.

On average, freelancers with AWS Certified Security – Specialty in Germany have 18 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 2.1 years.
