Development of an AI-supported system for lead generation

As part of an in-house development project, a pipeline for automated lead generation was created as the second stage of a preceding system for project monitoring. Based on a list of freelance project URLs (freelancermap), qualified lead records are generated, including company, contact person, official and personal email address, and the appropriate form of address (informal/formal). The technologies used were Python (openpyxl, requests) as well as an LLM agent workflow in VS Code (GitHub Copilot Chat) with a custom slash command and extensive rule set; search APIs (Serper.dev) are connected for research. My tasks included the full concept and development. The core is a rule set of around 480 lines that guides the LLM agent deterministically through extraction, website and email lookup, duplicate matching (against existing provider lists), and the creation of a structured JSON output. Deterministic steps (Excel matching, web/email search, pattern derivation) were moved into Python helper scripts. Other requirements included validating the results through versioned blind runs against a reference, iterative refinement of the rule set, and a swappable search provider layer for cost and stability reasons.

About the technology

Browser automation

Puppeteer is a Node.js library for controlling Chrome and Chromium through a high-level API. Companies use it to open pages, interact with forms, handle sessions, capture screenshots and generate PDFs. It is well suited to repeatable browser workflows that need precise control over real page behavior.

Testing with Chromium

Puppeteer supports end-to-end and integration testing for web applications. Specialists create browser scenarios that check navigation, authentication, forms, file downloads, responsive layouts and error states. They also configure headless execution, isolated test data, tracing and screenshots so failures can be reproduced in continuous integration.

Dynamic data workflows

Many sites render important content in the browser rather than in the initial HTML. Puppeteer can wait for JavaScript-driven content, follow interaction paths and collect structured results from authenticated or highly dynamic pages. Good implementations respect access rules, manage rate limits and separate extraction logic from business workflows.

  • Automate recurring Chromium tasks
  • Capture PDFs, screenshots and page traces
  • Validate user journeys across web applications
  • Collect data from JavaScript-rendered interfaces

Ecosystem and tooling

Puppeteer works naturally with Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, and it can run against Chromium or compatible browser targets. Projects often combine it with Jest, Mocha, Playwright-compatible reporting tools, Docker and CI systems such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI. Strong specialists understand selectors, browser contexts, network interception, cookies, permissions and asynchronous page events.

When specialists help

Freelance expertise is useful when a team needs dependable browser automation but lacks time to design a maintainable test or extraction setup. It can also help when flaky tests, browser version changes, blocked resources or complex authentication slow delivery. In Germany, remote collaboration is common, while on-site work may matter for regulated environments or close product-team coordination.

  • Stabilize unreliable end-to-end suites
  • Move manual browser processes into repeatable workflows
  • Design CI execution and failure diagnostics
  • Review security, access and data-handling practices

What quality looks like

Strong Puppeteer professionals write resilient selectors and explicit waits instead of relying on timing guesses. They keep browser sessions isolated, clean up resources and make failures observable through logs, traces and useful artifacts. They also explain trade-offs between Puppeteer, direct HTTP clients and alternatives such as Playwright, choosing browser automation only where it adds real value.

Frequently asked questions

Not sure where to start with Puppeteer? These answers cover the essentials.

Puppeteer is mainly used to automate Chrome and Chromium from Node.js. Companies use it for end-to-end testing, PDF and screenshot generation, browser-based workflows, performance inspection and data collection from JavaScript-rendered pages.

Puppeteer has a focused Chromium automation model and is a natural choice for teams already using the Chrome and Node.js ecosystem. Playwright offers broader cross-browser coverage and additional automation features, so the right choice depends on target browsers, existing tests and maintenance needs.

Puppeteer can reproduce browser behavior when content depends on JavaScript, cookies, navigation or user interaction. A direct HTTP client is usually simpler and faster for a stable public API, so a strong specialist uses browser automation only where page execution is necessary.

Puppeteer projects benefit from Node.js, TypeScript, asynchronous programming and knowledge of browser internals. Useful adjacent skills include Jest or Mocha, CI pipelines, Docker, network debugging, selector design, authentication flows and structured data processing.

Puppeteer work can be straightforward for a small, stable workflow, but production automation needs more careful judgment. The specialist should understand waits, browser contexts, retries, resource cleanup, test isolation and diagnostics rather than only knowing how to open a page.

Puppeteer work is well suited to remote collaboration because scripts, test results and CI logs can be reviewed asynchronously. German teams may still prefer on-site workshops for discovery, security reviews or close coordination with product and quality teams; clear English or German communication should be agreed early.

Puppeteer quality is visible in stable runs, clear failure artifacts and selectors that survive reasonable interface changes. Ask for examples of handling authentication, dynamic content, browser lifecycle, flaky behavior and CI execution, then review whether the solution is maintainable rather than merely functional.

Puppeteer may be a poor fit when a reliable API provides the required data or when broad browser coverage is central to the product. It can also be unsuitable for high-volume extraction without careful resource and access planning, where a specialist may recommend direct requests or another architecture.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects is 94 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 754 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects, 83% hold at least a Bachelor's degree and 50% hold at least a Master's degree.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects have 15 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 1.4 years.

The most common languages among freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects are German (100%), English (100%), and French (20%).

The most common industries among freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects are Information Technology (100%), Manufacturing (60%), and Retail (60%).

The most common business areas among freelancers in Germany who have used Puppeteer in their recent projects are Information Technology (100%), Product Development (100%), and Quality Assurance (67%).
