Last position:

Backend Software Developer (Java) at German Football Association (DFB) e. V.

  • Client: Prime Force Group GmbH

Technologies used: Java 25, Spring Boot 4, MapStruct, JSpecify, PostgreSQL, Redis, Liquibase, REST/OpenAPI, Apache Kafka, Apache Solr, OpenID Connect via IronGate/Keycloak, SAP Customer Data Cloud, JUnit, Testcontainers, Karate, Playwright, GitLab monorepo with CI/CD, Jenkins, JFrog Artifactory, FluxCD, Docker, Kubernetes on Azure, OpenTelemetry, arc42, Jira, Confluence

The Team Management Center is the new central platform of the DFB for planning, managing, and carrying out team activities for the national teams - from squad selection and training camps to communication with players, clubs, and legal guardians. The platform is designed for multi-tenancy for the DFB and regional associations; player, club, and master data are intentionally not copied, but connected at runtime via the DFBnet APIs.

I have been involved in the project continuously since the architecture and concept phase (Sprint 0) and work in a distributed Scrum team in two-week sprints. In addition to implementation, my focus is on architecture alignment, connecting the DFBnet interfaces, as well as code reviews and test automation as quality assurance in the team.

Focus areas:

  • Development and implementation of the multi-tenancy concept (tenant model for the DFB and regional associations), including data model, access layer, and Liquibase migrations.
  • Design of the person service and the search concept based on Apache Solr.
  • Integration of the DFBnet APIs (player, person, and club search, club data), including authentication and synchronous master data synchronization.
  • Hardening the integration through resilience patterns: separate read timeouts for each search path, correction of circuit breaker counting, limiting parallel requests, and a club cache to reduce load on the external system.
  • Development of self-service endpoints for players (own activities, activity details, games), including an access concept for participants, as well as person documents and file uploads.
  • Standardization of API design: OpenAPI annotations, nullability model via a custom ModelConverter, JSpecify migration of the DTOs, and documented API guidelines.
  • Build and maintenance of Karate-based API and integration tests, integration tests with Testcontainers, test guidelines, and bug triage from the integration and reference environments.
  • Code reviews via merge requests, architecture documentation according to arc42, and architecture decisions (ADRs) in Confluence.
  • Automated deployment to the integration and reference environments, analysis of login and OIDC issues in combination with IronGate.

Status: ongoing - as of 08/2026 in Sprint 17, around 940 person hours worked; testable delivery to the integration environment every two weeks.

About the technology

Browser automation

Playwright is an open-source browser automation framework from Microsoft for end-to-end testing and reliable web interaction. It supports Chromium, Firefox and WebKit through one API, making it useful for checking customer journeys across desktop and mobile browser contexts. Teams use it to validate applications, reproduce defects and automate repetitive browser tasks.

Test capabilities

Playwright experts create tests for authentication, navigation, forms, file handling, downloads, pop-ups and multi-page workflows. Built-in auto-waiting, locators, tracing, screenshots and video help reduce flaky checks and explain failures. They also cover responsive layouts, permissions, network conditions and parallel test execution.

  • End-to-end and regression suites
  • Cross-browser validation
  • API requests alongside UI tests
  • Visual and accessibility checks

Ecosystem and tooling

The Playwright Test runner provides fixtures, projects, retries, reporters and sharding for maintainable test operations. Strong specialists work with TypeScript or JavaScript, npm, Git and CI systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Jenkins. They may also connect Playwright with Docker, test management tools, cloud browsers and observability services.

When expertise matters

Companies bring in freelance Playwright professionals when a growing product needs broader coverage, faster feedback or a stable replacement for brittle Selenium suites. This is common during a platform migration, a major release, a quality initiative or the setup of a new continuous delivery pipeline. In Germany, remote collaboration is often practical, while regulated or complex product teams may prefer occasional on-site workshops.

  • Flaky tests block reliable releases
  • Browser coverage has grown too broad for manual checks
  • A test suite needs structure and ownership
  • CI failures lack useful diagnostics

What strong professionals deliver

Experienced Playwright specialists design test architecture rather than only record browser actions. They choose robust locators, isolate test data, manage authentication state and keep suites fast without hiding real failures. Good documentation, readable fixtures, clear failure evidence and sensible coverage make the result useful to product, quality and engineering teams.

Selecting the right specialist

Assess how a professional handles test strategy, application risks and failure investigation. Ask for examples involving parallel runs, cross-browser differences, API and UI coordination, or a difficult CI problem. The right specialist can explain trade-offs between Playwright, Selenium and Cypress, adapt to an existing codebase and communicate clearly with distributed teams in English or German.

Frequently asked questions

Need clarity? These are the questions we hear most often about Playwright.

Playwright is used to automate and test web applications in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Companies use it for end-to-end journeys, regression coverage, browser compatibility checks, visual validation and selected API workflows.

Playwright offers a single modern API across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, with built-in waiting, browser contexts, tracing and parallel execution. Selenium has a broader legacy ecosystem, while Cypress offers a distinctive in-browser workflow, so the best choice depends on application architecture, existing skills and test requirements.

A strong Playwright specialist should understand TypeScript or JavaScript, HTTP, DOM behavior, accessibility and test data design. Experience with Git, CI pipelines, Docker, API testing and defect analysis is also valuable when browser checks become part of continuous delivery.

The right Playwright experience depends on the scope and condition of the application, not on a fixed number of years. A small suite may need focused framework knowledge, while a large migration or flaky test rescue requires someone who can design architecture, improve CI reliability and coach the wider team.

Playwright work is well suited to remote collaboration because test code, reports and CI results are shared through common development tools. Teams in Germany should agree on working hours, documentation standards and whether occasional on-site sessions are needed for workshops or access-sensitive environments.

Review whether Playwright tests use stable locators, clear fixtures, isolated data and meaningful failure evidence. Ask how the specialist controls flakiness, measures useful coverage, handles parallel runs and keeps the suite maintainable as the product changes.

Playwright reduces repetitive manual checks but does not replace exploratory testing, usability review or product judgment. It is strongest when automated regression and critical user journeys support a broader quality process with clearly defined human review.

Before working with Playwright, freelancers should understand the application's environments, authentication model, test data, browser support policy and CI constraints. They should also clarify whether the goal is a new test architecture, a migration from Selenium or Cypress, or the stabilization of an existing suite.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects is 90 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 723 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects, 92% hold at least a Bachelor's degree, 41% hold at least a Master's degree, and 5% hold a doctorate.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects have 16 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 1.7 years.

The most common languages among freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects are German (98%), English (98%), and French (21%).

The most common industries among freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects are Information Technology (99%), Banking and Finance (56%), and Retail (47%).

The most common business areas among freelancers in Germany who have used Playwright in their recent projects are Information Technology (100%), Product Development (94%), and Quality Assurance (69%).
