Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Control framework

NIST 800-53, formally NIST Special Publication 800-53, is a catalog of security and privacy controls for information systems and organizations. It helps companies define safeguards, assign accountability and document how risks are managed. The framework supports control selection, tailoring and implementation rather than prescribing one fixed technical architecture.

Where it applies

Organizations use NIST 800-53 for cloud services, enterprise applications, government systems and environments that handle sensitive information. It is especially useful when procurement, governance or customer assurance requires a structured control set. In Germany, specialists may also align the framework with internal security policies and relevant European compliance obligations without treating it as a substitute for those requirements.

Control families

The framework groups controls into families covering access control, audit and accountability, configuration management, incident response, risk assessment, system integrity and supply chain risk management. Strong specialists connect these families to real processes, technical safeguards and evidence sources.

  • Select and tailor control baselines
  • Map controls to systems, owners and risks
  • Define implementation statements and evidence
  • Prepare assessment and remediation records

Ecosystem and tooling

NIST 800-53 work often connects with NIST SP 800-37, NIST SP 800-53A and the Risk Management Framework. Professionals may also use governance, risk and compliance tools, cloud security services, identity platforms, ticketing systems and configuration inventories. Useful adjacent knowledge includes security architecture, privacy controls, vulnerability management and audit preparation.

When to hire specialists

Freelance expertise helps when a company is creating a control program, moving regulated workloads to the cloud or preparing for an independent assessment. It is also valuable when existing documentation has gaps or control ownership is unclear.

  • Establish a practical control baseline
  • Translate requirements into operating procedures
  • Review evidence and identify deficiencies
  • Support remediation planning and assessment readiness

What quality looks like

A strong professional links every selected control to a clear risk, responsible owner, implementation status and reliable evidence. They distinguish policy language from implemented safeguards and explain exceptions without weakening the control objective. Look for experience with system boundaries, control inheritance, assessment methods and concise documentation that operational teams can maintain after the engagement.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about NIST 800-53? Start with the answers below.

NIST 800-53 is used to select, tailor and implement security and privacy controls for information systems and organizations. Companies use it to structure risk management, assign control ownership and prepare evidence for assessments or customer reviews.

NIST SP 800-53 provides a detailed catalog of controls, while ISO 27001 defines requirements for an information security management system and NIST CSF organizes cybersecurity outcomes and practices. They can be mapped together, but they serve different levels of detail and governance.

A strong NIST 800-53 professional usually understands the Risk Management Framework, NIST SP 800-53A, security architecture, cloud controls, identity management and audit evidence. Privacy risk, vulnerability management and governance, risk and compliance tooling are also valuable adjacent skills.

The right NIST 800-53 specialist depends on the scope and maturity of the environment. A focused control mapping task may need a narrower skill set, while baseline selection, system categorization and assessment readiness call for experience across governance, technology and evidence management.

NIST 800-53 work is often suitable for remote collaboration because interviews, document reviews and evidence analysis can take place online. On-site sessions may still help with workshops or sensitive environments, while German and English communication expectations should be agreed at the start.

Ask a NIST 800-53 professional to explain how they connect controls to risks, owners, system boundaries and evidence. High-quality work is specific, traceable and usable by operational teams; it does not rely on generic policy text or unchecked compliance claims.

A typical NIST 800-53 engagement may produce a tailored control baseline, system security plan inputs, control implementation statements, evidence registers and a remediation backlog. The exact deliverables should reflect the system scope, assessment method and responsibilities agreed with the company.

NIST 800-53 was created for federal information systems, but private companies also use it when they need a rigorous control structure for cloud services, sensitive data or public-sector customers. Its controls can be tailored to the organization’s risks instead of adopted without modification.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used NIST 800-53 in their recent projects is 108 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 866 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used NIST 800-53 in their recent projects, 80% hold at least a Bachelor's degree and 20% hold at least a Master's degree.
