Data Security

Hamburg
Enrique G.

Last position:

Security Architect at Capgemini

I implemented a Zero-Trust architecture for robust, military-grade maritime container mini data centers based on VMware & Tanzu to support containerized GIS workloads for ground forces. The main focus was on securing communications, workload protection, and data access in contested electronic battle environments affected by jamming, interception, signal manipulation, and constantly changing operational conditions. I designed and architected use cases so that every element of workload, identity, and system could continue to operate independently and securely even in degraded or disrupted scenarios. In parallel, I defined the enterprise and solution security architecture with LeanIX, Bizzdesign, and HOPEX as enterprise architecture, repository, and governance platforms to maintain architecture inventory, relationships, traceability, target pictures, and security governance in complex environments. For the architectural designs, I used Sparx Enterprise Architect to describe formal architecture views, interfaces, trust boundaries, and system architecture in both IT and OT environments. IriusRisk was used for threat modeling of the solution to identify architecture-driven risks, derive security requirements, and detect countermeasures and design gaps directly from the solution models. Risk and compliance management was supported with Archer. Architecture decisions, control gaps, and operational risks were translated into controlled governance and auditable compliance measures. For documentation, collaboration, and visual design, I used Confluence to maintain Architecture Decision Records, Security Blueprints, and workflows. I used Lucidchart and draw.io to create design artifacts tailored to stakeholders. I also defined OT security concepts with support from electrical and mechanical engineers in the areas of oil, vehicle onboard systems, rail, power plants, pharma, gas turbines, and nuclear technology. I created the end-to-end OT security strategy, starting with global policy, developed into standards and procedures, and finally aligned with Bell-LaPadula, Purdue Model, SABSA, TOGAF ADM, CENELEC 50701, IEC 62443, and NIST standards. In addition, I worked with engineering team leads to identify critical KBP assets and place them under protective measures that segmented SCADA, PLC, and HMI assets. I drove collaboration between Security, IT, and OT teams to create standardized workflows and use cases for the OT security solution catalog, while integrating Defense-in-Depth and Zero-Trust principles into operational environments. A key part of my work was integrating multidisciplinary engineering, security, and operations stakeholders into a unified security blueprinting strategy and ensuring that architecture, threat modeling, governance, and documentation were technically strong and operationally practical.

About the technology

Test automation platform

Katalon Studio is a low-code test automation platform for web, API, mobile and desktop applications. It combines a visual interface with scripting options based on Groovy, letting teams create tests without giving up control over complex scenarios. Its built-in keywords, object repositories and execution reports support repeatable quality checks across the delivery lifecycle.

Applications and coverage

Katalon Studio is used to validate customer-facing software, internal business systems and service integrations. Typical work includes:

  • End-to-end browser tests for responsive web applications
  • REST and SOAP API validation, including chained requests
  • Mobile tests for Android and iOS applications
  • Regression suites for desktop and packaged enterprise software
  • Data-driven checks across browsers, environments and user roles

Ecosystem and tooling

Strong specialists work with Katalon Studio’s object spy, test case and test suite features, as well as custom keywords and reusable profiles. They connect execution with Jenkins, Git, Azure DevOps or other CI/CD systems, and publish results through Katalon TestOps where suitable. Knowledge of Selenium, Appium, REST principles, SQL and defect tracking adds useful depth.

When companies need specialists

Companies often bring in freelance expertise when a test suite has become slow, fragile or difficult to maintain. Support is also valuable during a migration from manual checks, a major release, a new application launch or the introduction of continuous testing. In Germany, specialists may work remotely with distributed teams or join on-site sessions where product, quality and technical groups need close coordination.

Deliverables and working methods

A capable professional can assess existing coverage, define a test strategy and structure suites around stable business flows. Deliverables may include reusable test cases, custom keywords, test data, environment profiles, CI/CD jobs, defect evidence and maintenance guidance. Clear naming, version control, reliable waits and isolated test data keep automation useful rather than brittle.

Choosing strong Katalon expertise

Look for evidence of production test automation, not only recorded demonstrations. Strong professionals explain what belongs in the UI layer, API layer or exploratory testing, and how they reduce false failures. They can review selectors, improve execution time, document risks and communicate clearly in the language needed by the team. Experience with regulated or complex German business environments can also help when traceability and release evidence matter.

Frequently asked questions

Before you brief your next project: the most common questions about Katalon Studio.

Katalon Studio is used to automate functional, regression and end-to-end testing for web, API, mobile and desktop software. It supports visual test creation, scripting with Groovy, reusable keywords, data-driven testing and reports that help teams assess release quality.

Katalon Studio provides a broader ready-to-use workspace than Selenium, including object management, test execution, reporting and integrations. Selenium offers a flexible browser automation foundation, while Katalon Studio can reduce setup work for teams that want a more structured low-code and scripted approach.

A strong Katalon Studio specialist should understand software testing principles, API testing, browser automation and CI/CD. Experience with Groovy, Java concepts, Git, Jenkins, SQL, Appium, Selenium and defect tools such as Jira is often useful.

The right level depends on the scope, application risk and state of the existing test suite. A small set of stable checks may need focused specialist support, while enterprise automation requires someone who can design architecture, manage environments, review code and plan long-term maintenance.

Katalon Studio can complement existing Selenium and Appium work through its broader test management and execution features. A specialist should first review the current framework, decide what to reuse, and define a migration path that avoids duplicating fragile coverage.

Katalon Studio projects are generally suitable for remote collaboration when repositories, environments, test data and defect workflows are accessible. On-site workshops can still help with domain discovery, release planning or coordination across German-speaking teams, so language expectations should be agreed early.

Ask the specialist to explain coverage, failure handling, test data, selectors, execution time and maintenance ownership. High-quality Katalon Studio automation produces meaningful results, uses reusable components and distinguishes product defects from environment or test-design problems.

A Katalon Studio assignment may involve test design, framework cleanup, CI/CD integration, reporting or hands-on execution across several environments. Clarify application access, supported browsers or devices, release cadence, existing assets, scripting expectations and who owns test maintenance after delivery.

The average hourly rate of freelancers in Germany who have used Katalon Studio in their recent projects is 91 €, which corresponds to a daily rate of about 725 € based on an 8-hour working day.

Of the freelancers in Germany who have used Katalon Studio in their recent projects, 78% hold at least a Bachelor's degree and 44% hold at least a Master's degree.

On average, freelancers in Germany who have used Katalon Studio in their recent projects have 19 years of professional experience, with a single engagement typically lasting around 1.7 years.
