Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Oceanography, working on numerical modelling of sea-ice thermodynamics. Converted MATLAB sea-ice modelling package to Fortran, substantially improving computational performance and portability. Enhanced the numerical treatment of the nonlinear Stefan problem governing snow and ice temperature, growth and melt, yielding more accurate resolution of ice- and snow-thickness evolution. Contributing author on peer-reviewed work linking Southern Ocean sea-ice and climate processes to marine ecosystem dynamics.

Extended an existing finite element package from static (magneto-static) formulations to nonlinear transient analysis, including a Newton–Raphson solver capable of handling nonlinear hysteresis models via weak (distributional) derivatives, and energy-based PDE solvers for transient machine dynamics. Work validated against 2D finite element and industry-standard reference solutions, and published in peer-reviewed journals including IEEE Transactions on Magnetics and Progress In Electromagnetics Research.

I developed a finite-element model of chondrocyte (cartilage cell) to study its dynamic mechanical response to low-intensity ultrasound. Using COMSOL Multiphysics the Acoustics–Poroelastic Waves module, I modeled each part of the cell; nucleus, nuclear envelope, cytoplasm, and membrane as a biphasic poroelastic medium based on Biot's theory. Through frequency-dependent analysis, I computed the mechanical energy stored in the cell and identified its resonant frequency (~5.1 MHz), where energy coupling is maximized. A key finding was that the nucleus stores roughly twice the energy density of the cytoplasm, which helped explain how ultrasound at resonance drives frequency-dependent gene expression. This work contributed to a peer-reviewed publication in PLOS ONE.

My PhD research (University of Cape Town) developed and analysed mixed finite element methods for elasticity, focusing on near-incompressible materials where conventional elements perform poorly. Using the three-field (Hu–Washizu) formulation, I introduced a systematic way to build new families of stable elements from known stable Stokes pairs, producing extended MINI, Crouzeix–Raviart, and Hood–Taylor elements in two and three dimensions and proving their uniform convergence. I also established rigorous convergence proofs for two previously unanalysed formulations and extended the framework to nonlinear elasticity. Numerical benchmarks confirmed optimal convergence and the absence of locking in the incompressible limit. The work led to two peer-reviewed journal publications.

My MSc research (University of KwaZulu-Natal) developed and implemented the moving finite element method (MFEM) in two dimensions for nonlinear PDEs with shock-like solutions, where standard fixed-grid methods are prohibitively expensive. I derived the two-dimensional formulation — basis functions, the state-dependent mass matrix, and a penalty-based regularisation to keep the evolving mesh stable — and implemented it for the Burgers' equation, integrating the resulting differential–algebraic system with an implicit Radau IIA Runge–Kutta scheme. Numerical experiments at Reynolds numbers up to 10⁴, on structured and unstructured grids, confirmed that the method resolves moving shock fronts accurately using relatively coarse meshes.
